What is Roku Ruku or Roko?

What is Roku Ruku or Roko?

What is Roku Ruku or Roko

Roku is pure TV awesomeness all wrapped up inside a small little black box

If you were to say the number 6 out loud in Japanese, you would be saying Roku because it's their number six 六. The founder of Roku Anthony Wood, who earlier on also invented one of the first DVRs and the ReplayTV, chose the name Roku to commemorate his sixth invention. After this February's announcement that Roku has sold 8 million of their streamers, it has proven to be one of his most successful inventions to date.

To clear up some confusion about the name, it's not spelled Rocku or Ruku or even Roko. It's simply spelled Roku.

For those new to media streaming, Roku is one of the best selling, and most popular media streamers available today. Roku is currently outselling it's closest rival another popular media streamer the Apple TV. Here is why, early on Roku did something no other media streaming company was willing to do. They opened up their software and made it available for channel developers for free to create their own TV channels for the Roku platform. Roku media streamers also played a wider range of video formats then Apple.

get a Roku, Ruku or Roko
When the company introduced their first Roku model the DVP back on May 20 of 2008, it was sold as a simple Netflix box and really only had a small handful of channels. Fast Forward to 2014 and now that Roku is on it's third generation of hardware, it currently has over 1500 channels available both public and also private. Plus more new channels are released almost daily.

Private Roku channels are channels built by channel developers that for whatever reason decided not to publish their channels on the Roku channel store. They still often share their channels with the Roku community by way of a private channel code or link. These even include private Adult Only Roku channels that are not allowed to be public or published in the Roku channel store.

No Monthly Fee!

Roku charges no monthly fee after you buy their box. This is like having a free pass to watch a huge library of online video content hosted on the internet right on your TV. Most all Roku channels are free. Netflix, Hulu Plus and a few other premium channels do charge a monthly fee to pay for the huge selection of programming offered on their channels.

Media Server Extenders for Windows Media Center HTPC

Media Server Extenders for Windows Media Center PC

Turn your Windows 7 Media Center PC into an HTPC DVR

A Media Center Extender can turn an ordinary PC into a full fledged Media Server. *With a CableCARD Tuner, Windows 7 Media Center and an HD Antenna it will transform your PC into a Free DVR that can record, pause, rewind and play back Free over the air HD TV.

Home Theater Computer or Media Server Advantages over a Simple Media Streamer

When you buy a Media Streamer like an Apple TV or Roku two of today's biggest sellers, they are somewhat limited or restricted on which media files they can play. The Apple TV as it comes from the factory, only plays mp4 files. This is what all their movies are encoded in when you rent them from iTunes. To play avi or mkv files, you will need to jailbreak it. Unfortunately, not all models can be jailbroken.

Transcoding avi and mkv files to mp4 and adding them to your iTunes library is another alternative option. This is a time consuming process that can quickly become tiresome and inconvenient.

Roku is a little more flexible and will play most avi and mkv file types, although some if encoded incorrectly, can actually lock up your Roku. Or, they simply freeze and won't play the video all the way through. Roku media streamers play most files encoded in  mov, mp4 and m4v file formats fine.

A media server or home theater personal computer (HTPC) will play pretty much anything. You are never restricted to a particular file type. If if ever a new popular file format becomes popular, just install the latest codec package and your on your way again.

*SiliconDust HDHomeRun PRIME 3-Tuner

Prime 3 is a DLNA/UPnP Compatible Streaming Media Player that is fully compatible with Windows Media Center. Even with encrypted or copy protected content. The HDHomeRun Prime 3 contains three tuners that let your tune into unencrypted digital cable TV channels and also premium digital cable TV with the use of cable cards. It comes complete with three HDTV Tuners that works great with popular DVR software. This can eliminate expensive additional monthly DVR rental fees from your cable TV provider.

For Cable cutters check out the HDHomeRun Dual. It contains two ATSC over the Air HD TV Tuners.

HTPC Offers More Control Over Software

An HTPC or Home Media Server offers much more flexibility, When you purchase a media streamer you are limited to the OS that is installed by the manufacturer. With an HTPC you can install Windows 7 Media Center, which is excellent and is almost a turnkey installation for most media servers and HTPC setups. You also have the option use Plex or XBMC.

Windows 7 Media Center Extenders

Size is where media streamers rock. They are silent, small and unobtrusive hockey puck size devices that can easily be hooked to your television. With their onboard WiFi they can be placed in any number of convenient locations. A media server or Windows Media Center PC is usually much larger, noisier and often unsightly so no one really wants one sitting next to their wall hung LED flat screen TV. Although some of the newer ones from Assassin HTPC are shrinking in size and look quite impressive in a media cabinet.

There a couple of ways to get streaming content from your Windows Media Center HTPC when it is in another room or not positioned directly next to your television. Run a HDMI cable up to 50' long, along with a wireless keyboard/trackpad or remote control input device. Optionally to control and access it without a keyboard or mouse,  add a remote access VNC app to a tablet or laptop.

Even though fishing cable through ceilings and walls can often prove difficult sometimes, ultimately this is the best way to watch content from your media server as you are using your television as an extended monitor to your Windows Media Center HTPC. There will be no lag due to interference with WiFi or barrier distance limitations. If your HDMI cable needs to be longer than 50' they sell HDMI boosters or amplifiers that simply connect to a power source at each end of the HDMI cable.

Use your Roku as a Windows Media Center Extender

The Roku Wallop Channel will also play back your  recorded content from a HDHomeRun. Plus with Roku you have access to over 1500 Roku channels both private and public channels many which can be found here on our Private Roku Channels List.

Use a Roku with Windows 7 Media Center or Plex

With the Plex channel installed on Roku it will give you access to your file library on your Media Server or Windows Media Center HTPC.
You can also install the Plex server software on your HTPC and use it instead of Windows Media Center along with the Plex Roku Channel.

Use a Jailbroken Apple TV with XBMC

If you are fortunate enough to own a 1st or 2nd generation Apple TV, you can jailbreak it and install XBMC on it to access your Windows or Mac media files from your media server or HTPC. These files will play fine on your  Apple TV. The only hardware limitation is they will only be available in 720P  instead of 1080P HD. It was not until the Apple TV 3 that their hardware supported 1080P. Unfortunately their is still no jailbreak available yet for this model.

GBOX-Midnight MX2 with XBMC

Using XBMC on a GBOX Midnight MX2 is another great media server extender that will also give you access to play all your media files from your Windows or Mac PC. This little media streamer is very powerful and will give you full 1080P HD resolution. Read more about the GBOX Midnight MX2.

While there certainly quite a few more alternatives, these are today's most popular extenders for accessing content from a Media Server or Windows Media Center HTPC.

Channel Master DVR+ Free Over the Air HDTV Recording DVR Alternative to Cable TV

Channel Master DVR+ Record Free Over the Air HDTV - DVR Alternative to Cable TV

Now Cable TV cord-cutters, can record live TV shows on a Channel Master DVR with no monthly fee

One thing many people soon miss after cutting the cord is their HDTV DVR. This is one service that Satellite and Cable TV companies offer that is well worth the money. Pausing and time-shifting your favorite shows, fast forwarding through commercials or recording an entire series on a Tivo or content provider DVR, is something that seriously changed the way we watched television.

Channel Master is bringing cable cutters back some DVR magic by offering an external box that records free over the air HDTV from an antenna signal with dual built-in ATSC tuners. The Channel Master DVR also features Ethernet or WiFi with an optional USB Wi-Fi adapter. Included is 16gb of onboard memory for storing the guide and channel information and offers limited space for recordings. To enable dual tuner recording, you must hook up an external flash or hard drive to the USB port. This also expands the Channel Master DVR+ storage capacity to hold much more recorded content.

Channel Master DVR with No Monthly Fee

One thing that most Cable TV DVRs, and even ATSC DVRs like the TiVo Roamio have in common is they require you to subscribe to their online TV Guide. While TiVo charges $14.99 per month for their service. Channel Master DVR sells their box with a lifetime subscription so there is no annoying monthly fee for their 14 day guide or DVR software. Unlike newer smaller companies, Channel Master has been in business making antennas for a long while now so they will continue to be around for a long time.

Setting Up a Channel Master DVR+ is Easy

Installing and setting up the channel master is quick and easy. It attaches to your router either by WiFi or with an Ethernet cable. Then simply attach your HD antenna cable and a HDMI cable from your television. They also sell an optional IR extension cable if you want to hide the Channel Master DVR+ inside a cabinet. Once setup just run the app to locate and install your local over the air HDTV channels. We have included a link to the Channel Master DVR+ setup guide and manual below which explains how to do this in detail:

HDHomeRun

The HDHome Run is another network ATSC recording device that offers multiple models. Their Prime model includes cable cards for recording Cable TV along with three separate tuners, If you are a cable cutter the HDHomeRun Dual is a model that would better fit your needs.

Unlike the Channel Master DVR+ and TiVo Roamio, the HDHomeRun requires a separate TV along with additional software on a Mac or Windows PC or HTPC to record your content. If you are already using one as a Plex or media server, an HDHomeRun will save you some money as there is no monthly fee. Otherwise, the Channel Master or TiVo DVR may be a better choice for recording free over the air HDTV.

Please click here, to get more information on HDHomeRun Network DVRs.

TiVo Roamio is another great DVR alternative for cable cutters which offers some really great features. TiVo was one of the first DVR companies to go mainstream and is also an excellent DVR. The hard drive is included and built-in so you won't need to hook up an external drive.

If you plan on getting a TiVo Roamio HD Digital Video Recorder and Streaming Media Player, the (TCD846500) is their only model that includes an ATSC Tuner for recording from an HD antenna.

HDMI Cables Save Your Money Unless Your Rich

HDMI Cables - Save Your Money Unless Your Rich

A Tale of Two HDMI Cables

hdmi-cable

upon a time, two HDMI cables were manufactured and placed on the shelf of a major retail electronics store. The first HDMI cable was not very flashy and had only simple gold colored plated connectors. In fact it looked rather drab. Along came Average Schmoe and his eyes went right to the other HDMI cable that had a fancy carbon jacket with high grade silver plated connectors.

As much as he really would have loved to buy this this fancy high priced $300 HDMI cable, he knew in his heart that with his meager salary, a car payment and home mortgage, he could never afford such an expensive luxury.

So he settled for the plain simple HDMI cable, placed it in his cart, checked out and paid ten dollars to the friendly clerk and took it home.

Earlier that day, Mr. Rich and Famous heard from some friends at the Country Club about a website on the internet called mkvXstream.com They told him about a huge list of some very interesting "Private Roku Channels"

Since his wife was at her tennis lesson, it was a perfect time to hook up a new Roku 3 that was given to them as a gift by their family attorney. He planned on using this on their rather small 120" 4K Ultra HD television that electrically came down from the ceiling in their bedroom when powered on by the remote.

When he opened the Roku box, there was no HDMI cable included. It was just as well since he never used those inexpensive cables anyway and would throw them away and always replaced them with something of much higher quality.

Since it was Sunday, it was his Driver's day off so he jumped in his bright red Ferrari and went to pick up a new HDMI cable at the local Electronics store.

Upon entering the store, he immediately noticed there were only a couple of HDMI cables to choose from. When he saw the rather plain looking inexpensive $10 black HDMI cables his heart dropped and he recoiled in disgust. It was only when he noticed the $300 price tag on the Carbon HDMI cable on the shelf beside it he breathed a sigh of relief. They had what he needed.

He read the package and noticed the connectors even contained Solid 5% Silver-Plated LGC Conductors - For reduced signal loss. A few minutes later a friendly clerk greeted Mr. Rich and Famous and offered to show him an even nicer more expensive $700 Solid 10% Silver-Plated LGC Conductors HDMI cable behind the counter. Mr. Rich and Famous could hardly contain his excitement as he presented his Black Platinum VISA card to the store clerk to complete the purchase of his 10% Silver-Plated HDMI cable.

Meanwhile, Average Joe just finished hooking up his rather plain ten dollar HDMI cable to their 32" LCD TV which they bought at the Goodwill Store for a hundred dollars. The TV was a little scratched up from having been moved from home to home, although it still seemed to work fine. It was especially nice since it received a handful of free over the air HD TV channels with a small and inexpensive antenna.

silver HDMI cable
The Roku 2 was a gift from his father-in-law. Ever since they received it, the kids had been begging him to hook it up. They wanted to watch free cartoons plus a 1000 free other Roku channels they heard about from their friends at school.

Today was the day Average Joe wanted to surprise them when they came home from Sunday School. Once the new HDMI cable was plugged in and after a quick and simple setup procedure the television came alive with many new channels. There was so much great content to watch on Roku and the picture was so beautiful, crisp and in full HD, that the expensive $300 HDMI cable was soon a distant memory.

The kids came home from Church and were so excited, they all gave their Daddy a big hug. They were so happy to be able to watch more than just a handful of free over the air channels and their Dad was the best Dad ever.

While this was going on, Mr Rich and Famous finished hooking up his Roku 3 to his new very expensive Carbon Fiber, Solid 10% Silver-Plated HDMI Cable and the picture was also very crisp and beautiful.

Unfortunately, what he did not realize is, had he purchased and installed the ten dollar HDMI cable, his eyes would have been unable to see a difference in the picture quality.

The moral of this story is when it comes to HDMI cables, just because you pay more doesn't mean the picture quality is always better. Save your money, your eyes will not be able to see the difference. Although your wallet sure will.

Roku 4 - Could be the Best Roku Media Streamer Ever!

Roku 4 - Could be the Best Roku Media Streamer Ever!

While we are still waiting patiently for the Roku 4, here is our wish list…

The Roku 3 really turned quite a few heads in the media streaming community when it was first introduced. A Roku 4 will need more than a pretty new case and some faster hardware under the hood to up the ante. Here are some features and fixes we wish Roku would include to make the Roku 4 better than ever.

Roku 4 Wish List

Roku 4 WiFi Performance Enhancement

Roku needs to implement the latest wireless technology. 802.11AC is currently the fastest wireless standard for WiFi Routers.  Roku needs to support this in their new Roku 4. While they are at it, why not add an external antenna port for an optional WiFi antenna to overcome distance and barrier limitations that can often cause glitches and loss of performance.

Even better, have the new Roku 4 support Quantenna Communications new “10G Wi-Fi.” They are boasting transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps with much further range than today's fastest WiFi standards and should be available next year.

Running an Ethernet wire is not always possible. If Roku improves their WiFi specs, it will most certainly help increase customer satisfaction with their flagship product.

Fix the Blue Screen HDCP Issue

This seems to be a common complaint with the Roku 3. One that is easily solved by making sure your HDMI cable is HDCP compliant. With the amount of issues people have had, why not just include an HDCP cable with the Roku 4? HDMI Cables don't cost that much and this would help eliminate another source of customer frustration and greatly improve Roku customer satisfaction.

Enhance the Roku Channel Store

Roku could make a few minor changes to it's already awesome channel store. Give the Roku 4 voice search that unlike the Amazon Fire TV will work across multiple streaming service providers. Especially Netflix and Hulu Plus.

Allow turning off channels by category when browsing the Roku channel store. We all love the fact that Roku has over two thousand channels. We would love it even more if we could choose just the categories we wanted to see. Roku needs to customize the channel viewing experience by turning off segments of channels so we don't need to slosh through their entire channel list when browsing for new Roku channels. Or better yet, maybe implement viewer preference based browsing the way Netflix does with their movie database. These could be based on past channel installs.

Roku 4 Front Panel Reset Button

One feature we would really love to see is a small reset button on the front panel of the Roku 4. Having to pull out the cord to reset your Roku seems kind of low tech for a modern high tech media streamer. It does not need to be a big red button, just make it easy to access. It would be fine even if it required a pen or paperclip to reset your Roku. This way little fingers won't accidentally reset your Roku during your favorite episode of House of Cards.

5 Reasons Why Drobo Beats Online Backup

5 Reasons Why Drobo Beats Online Backup

Why keep paying for online backup when you can Drobo

Drobo made a name for itself early on in the NAS market by releasing a friendly easy to use network attached storage device. With the proliferation of online backup sites, here are five reasons why buying a Drobo may be the best choice.

Drobo better than Online Backup

Lower Lifetime Cost

1. Most Online Backup services offer a low introductory rate.
They give you a small storage area on their server and when you need more space they charge more. Storage both online and in the real world is something that always seems to fill up over time. No matter how much you space you start off with at some point you will want or need more. Here is an example of how quickly prices can escalate for online backup storage.

Dropbox a popular online backup site offers new users who sign up a free 2 GB account. Their free account offers very little in extra features like backup protection or encryption. To get these features you need to sign up for their Pro account. Currently a Dropbox Pro account costs $9.99 per user per month for 100 GB. If you want data backup protection, this costs an additional $3.99 a month. It's easy to see how quickly the price for online backup storage can escalate. If you wanted 1 TB of storage with backup protection, which is the smallest hard drive you can get for a Drobo, a Dropbox Pro account would cost you $103.89 a month or $1246.68 a year. Compare this to the cost of a Drobo 5D 5-bay Storage Array with two 1 GB Hard Drives for $849. Using this simple calculation, it's easy to see why using a Drobo or other high quality NAS like Synology or QNAP is much more affordable over a period of time.

Safe and Private

2. A Drobo Offers more privacy and keeps your files from prying eyes. When you host your data with an online backup service, unless you archive encrypt and password protect your files you are never really sure that your data is private. A snoopy admin can access your data and determine that you have something in your virtual cloud that is against their terms or policies and delete it. If you don't have a backup this information can be lost forever. With a Drobo or other NAS, you are the admin and in control of your own files. You can choose what to share on your home Network or with friends and family on the other side of the world.

Scalable

3. Your data is secure and scalable. If you outgrow your 1 GB hard drive and need more storage simply purchase two large hard drive and insert them into the extra slots. Drobo will automatically format and start moving your data to your new larger drives. The Drobo can be configured with up to five 4 TB hard drives, enough space to last for a very long time.

Flexible

4. A Drobo or other NAS is more flexible. It can replace an expensive home network media server. Want to store files for later viewing or listening? A Drobo 5N can act as a home media server. It comes in a much smaller package and uses less power than an old computer delegated to this task. It is also very quiet so it can be placed in close proximity to your home entertainment system.

Performance

5. A Drobo 5D can be configured with a single SSD for the Operating System and quick access to your Applications. This opens up files lightning fast and almost 10X faster than a normal hard drive to give you ultimate performance while still giving you a massive amount of backup capacity. You will not be impacted by internet outages. Try binge watching something from your online backup service provider next time your broadband provider goes down. With a Drobo or other NAS, you will still be watching your favorite movie or video files without missing a beat.
