Android TV Home Screen Ads Fix for Nvidia SHIELD

Once upon a time when the Nvidia SHIELD was launched and up until 2021 there were no ads of any kind on the home screen. Then early that year, another Google Android update rolled out which FUBARed everything. Well at least for those that hated to see new “content recommendations” or "cough" ads on their home screen.

To add insult to injury, this new feature if you can even call it that, took over the upper third portion of the home screen. And there was no easy way to remove it.

But if this new ad panel drives you nuts, here is a simple workaround that can make it go away. We are not going to install a 3rd party launcher that is also another method to make the "content recommendations" go away.


Why This Method is Better than Disabling Google Services or Using a 3rd Party Launcher


Early on there was a workaround that if you disable certain Google services in the Android operating system settings you could make the home screen look like it once did. But this has its own set of problems which caused some Google apps to stop working. It was a clunky workaround, and installing a 3rd party launcher or using this other method on your Nvidia SHIELD is a much better solution.


While installing a 3rd party launcher is certainly an option. It uses extra resources and can introduce other issues. Some prefer simply using the default launcher. So you can use this method to block Google Ads and use your stock launcher instead.

This won't eliminate everything completely, but it will block the Google ads and only show you generic Google Services instead.

You can either use a Pihole to block the Web address where the ads originate from, or you can block the DNS address or block the following Web address in your Router:
*.androidtvwatsonfe-pa.googleapis.com


After blocking the URL with one of the methods listed above, you need to do one more step to say goodbye to the annoying ads.

Go into Settings/Apps on your SHIELD, then clear cache/data for the Android TV app. Then your home screen will look like the image above.


You also have the option to have other Google Apps like the Google Play Store, or Google Play Movies and TV shows on the screen instead.


An App like Blokada is also an option for those that can't block URLs directly in their Router, or just want an easier method. Download Blokada for your SHIELD and add the "goodbyeads list" to eliminate the ads from the SHIELD home screen as well.
