Nvidia SHIELD Android OS 11 Update Causes Chaos

Nvidia SHIELD Android 11 Upgrade is Here

Another Android OS Update 11 is Currently Rolling Out for the Nvidia SHIELD

Nvidia SHIELD Android OS 11 Update

This latest update for the Nvidia SHIELD differs from those in the past. Known as Nvidia Shield Experience 9.0, it will bring some of the same features found in the Google TV 11 update.

Along with new enhanced security measures, SHIELD owners can look forward to various bug fixes to make their Android Google TV operating system even more stable.

Additional Features of Android OS 11

  • Expanded aptX Support for a wider range of Bluetooth headphones
  • One time security permission for apps.
  • Additional Text to Speach accessibility
  • Dolby Vision HDR for Google Play movies
  • Enhanced GeForce Now subscriber support with more features for gamers.
  • Nvidia RTX 3080 Game Streaming support for 4K, 60fps, and HDR available on the SHIELD.

Bluetooth Gaming Controller Sleep Mode

One final feature gamers will appreciate with the new Android OS 11 update is now their connected Bluetooth controllers will sleep when the SHIELD goes into sleep mode.

What we probably won't see is an easy way to eliminate the added ad space that Google TV introduced to the SHIELD. They upset many users when Google commandeered the upper third of the Nvidia SHIELD home screen to display ads for other channels and streaming TV services they did not even subscribe to.

While there is an easy way to disable this with the use of 3rd party launchers, or by turning off and disabling system settings. It would be nice if users could easily opt out in the settings without resorting to a complicated work around.

Since Google is an advertisement based company, we may unfortunately see more ads introduced with future updates. The nice thing is for now, there are still ways this can be easily blocked on the SHIELD TV.

Warning Latest Update Breaks Some Apps

Some SHIELD users are reporting that the Shield Experience 9.0 broke some things. Here is what we know so far:

1. Apps no longer work. One solution is to go to SETTINGS and APPS and choose the apps that no longer work and go to AUTHORIZATION and give permission. Then force stop the app and after opening the app it should then work normally.

2. There is also a hotfix image available for NVIDIA SHIELD TV Software Upgrade 9.0+ that fixes these issues. But once you install this you can no longer roll back the update.

3. If using the SHIELD as an Emulator. One member reported that when you update you lose external storage access for a lot of apps. A Shield used for emulation some emulators are now unable to see an external drive.

It may be smart to hold off for a bit with this update until it's confirmed that some of these issues have been officially fixed.

A reccomended fix is out from Nvidia Customer Support which you can read more about here.
