Nvidia Shield Fix for Broken Apps in Android 11
The Android 11 Update broke many apps, here's what you need to do to fix them
The Nvidia SHIELD is one of the most updated Android devices on the planet. No other manufacture has offered the level of ongoing support, even for discontinued models the way Nvidia has done over the past five years.
Most of the time updates are no big deal, but this last update, Android 11, broke some things which left users with a level of frustration that normally does not happen with SHIELD updates.
Fortunately for SHIELD owners, Nvidia customer support quickly released a solution for broken apps that no longer load.
Here is what Nvidia Customer Support said to fix apps which can no longer access internal storage:
This will need to be done for each app having issues individually.
Users of Plex for accessing their media files are reporting their shared drives and file servers are inaccessible. So they can't access their files.
Try the fix suggested above from Nvidia above, which may fix some servers issues. But some Plex users report that even after applying the permissions fix, they still can't access external hard drives or SSD drives.
If you are a big time Plex user, it may be a good idea to shut off Auto Updates in your SHIELD Settings menu. And sit this update out for a while longer. Or at least until some of these issues with this latest SHIELD update get officially resolved. Plex is supposedly also looking into this and may issue their own fix for this bug as a Plex app update.
If your Nvidia SHIELD shows a black screen on your TV after doing the update. Here's what to do if unplugging and re plugging it back still does nothing.
Here is what Nvidia Customer Support said to fix apps which can no longer access internal storage:
"Android 11 includes a new permission system to allow file access to apps. Many apps have not yet adopted the new system. To allow file permission manually for these apps go to Settings -> Apps -> [File management app] -> Permissions and enable “Files and Media” access for the app. If you see permission options to “Allow while using this app” and “Allow all the time”, select “Allow all the time.”
This will need to be done for each app having issues individually.
