ULTIMATE ROKU AIRPLAY USER'S GUIDE

Roku AirPlay is The Best Alternative for Now Defunct Roku Private Channels

Ever since Roku removed private channels from its platform, many users are now using Roku AirPlay 2 to fill the gap. AirPlay is an excellent workaround for this.
Private channels would let you watch unapproved content on Roku. These included many popular Adult XXX streaming sites, Live IPTV streams, and on-demand content from popular online streaming websites.

Roku AirPlay User's Guide

Why AirPlay Beats Screen Mirroring

AirPlay is Apple's answer to screen mirroring content from a Web Browser onto your TV screen. If your TV has AirPlay included, then you don't even need a Roku. Many Smart TVs from LG, Samsung, Sony, and Vizio all include support for AirPlay on newer models.

For televisions that don't come with AirPlay, using a Roku is an easy way to stream Internet content directly on a big-screen TV.

Screen Mirroring will place a mirror image of the screen of an iPad or iPhone directly onto your television. It shows the desktop and while you can maximize the video playing[ ]\the full screen which will hide everything else. The biggest drawback is you can't use your mobile device for anything else while the video is playing.

Apple AirPlay 2, which Roku now supports only projects the playing video onto your TV. You won't see the icons or anything else just the movie or show you're trying to watch. And you can still use your phone or tablet to check email, use a browser, or do other things on your phone at the same time while the movie is playing.

How to Use AirPlay on Roku to Mirror Content From an iPhone, iPad, or Mac PC to Your Television

It's really quite easy to use AirPlay to mirror content to Roku or other media streamers like an Apple TV that supports AirPlay. But you will need an iPhone, iPad, or Mac PC before you can use AirPlay on Roku. Android phones can't use AirPlay, although they also support their own Chromecast casting which is similar.

First, verify your Roku media player or Roku TV is running the correct version of software needed for AirPlay 2. Check the model number listed for your Roku in the table below.
To check your Roku software version, on the Roku Home screen go to Settings/System then select About.

  • Step1. Use your iPhone, iPad, or Mac PC and find a song, video, photo, or even podcast you would like to watch on your TV.
  • Step2. Different apps can use slightly different icons for AirPlay. But once you get used to the process, it's very fast. In the app, or Web page look for the AirPlay icon. And tap on it.
  • Step3. From the dialog menu that pops up select the name of your Roku player or Roku TV. Your television should then after a second or two show or play what was on your phone tablet, or computer.

It's normal for the content to NOT play on your Phone, Tablet, or PC at the same time while it is playing on a TV using AirPlay. Go ahead and use your host device for something else while the TV continues to play what you sent over to it using Roku AirPlay.

To Stop AirPlay and resume watching on your portable device or PC, tap the icon once again and choose the device that you would like to watch from the list.

AirPlay Not Working? Let's Fix It

There may be times you want to use AirPlay on your Roku and nothing happens. You may see a message that says "AirPlay not available". This can be frustrating, but most times it's an easy fix.
First, try to reboot your iPhone or iPad then try using AirPlay once again. This usually fixes it and the next time you use AirPlay the video should then start playing on your TV without issues.

Original AirPlay Vs AirPlay 2

Newer Roku models, Apple TVs, and select TVs now support the latest version simply named AirPlay 2. Here is how they are different.

In 2017 Apple updated its wireless streaming method with the release of AirPlay2. Which now supports streaming audio to multiple rooms while keeping the sound in sync.

This allows you to control any AirPlay speakers individually. And it lets you choose and play different music on each speaker located throughout your home from your iPhone.

Use Bluetooth with AirPlay and Make Your TV Sound Much Better

Flat-panel TVs don't provide much room for great-sounding speakers. But you can use a Bluetooth-powered speaker or the excellent CCRadio 3 which has support for Bluetooth audio streaming. This will greatly enhance the sound while watching television.

The CCRadio 3 is especially nice because it also supports AM/FM, NOAA Weather/Alerts, and 2-Meter Ham. The clear audio quality from this radio is phenomenal, and this will greatly help anyone that may be hearing impaired. Especially if they have a tough time listening to what's being said when people are speaking in TV shows and movies.

Check eBay for deals, and since the radio can be placed pretty much anywhere in a room, it's a great alternative to a big bulky sound bar. With smaller and wall-mounted TVs, a soundbar is not always the best option. And this radio has a clearer sound than many soundbars that will cost even more. Be sure to only get version 3,  as prior models don't support Bluetooth audio streaming.

With an AirPlay-enabled Roku, and a Bluetooth radio or speakers, you can wirelessly enhance your streaming TV experience to make it even better.
Here's how to get Bluetooth working on a compatible Roku media player.
