Big Cable Lost 700,000 Subscribers in the 3rd Quarter this Year

Things are not looking good for Big Cable

Cable TV Providers Lost Twice as many Subscribers in the 3rd Quarter as Last Year

big cable TV alternatives

700,000 former cable TV customers called it quit to over priced subscription TV packages in favor of streaming TV alternatives. And the news couldn't be much worse for big cable TV providers.

Having enjoyed near monopoly status for many years, the era of big cable is coming to a well-deserved end. Instead of trying to figure out ways to innovate their business model to keep their customers on their payroll. Big cable companies for a long time simply went into denial.

You can't blame them, really. For the past 50 years, they have been getting along just fine doing nothing different. Except for adding more commercials, and rising prices. Often increasing their monthly subscription fee even more than once a year. This left many of their customers angry, but with nowhere else to go, they kept on paying month after month.

When streaming television became popular, with channels like Netflix. You could binge watch TV shows for weeks without watching commercials. For many, it was an instant gratification that was not available from cable TV or satellite. Where you either had to buy a DVR, or had to watch never ending commercials.

So not only did cord cutters achieve the gift of time by no longer needing to sit through another commercial. They could also watch entire television seasons all at once. This was much nicer than waiting for a new episode to drop once a week.

Antennas also played a big part in the reason many people left cable TV. For a relatively negligible sum, they can instal an antenna in your attic or on a roof. And this opened the door to watch many popular network TV channels from local network affiliates. All for no monthly fee.

Yes, 2021 is a much different world than 1983, but we still have a long way to go before everyone else has cut the cord for good.

Here's How Many People Still Subscribe to the Big Cable TV Providers

At number one, Comcast currently still has 18.5 million subscribers and lost 400,000 in the 3rd quarter of 2021
Charter Spectrum has 15.9 million subscribers and lost 121,000
Cox lost 70,000 Subscribers
Dish Lost 130,000 Subscribers
DirecTV Lost 412,000 Paying Customers
Verizon FiOS Lost 68,000 Subscribers

Now that the reality of the sheer number of subscriber losses has sunk in, many cable TV companies are doing what they can to entice users to stay.
Some went even as far as offering their own streaming on demand content. But this could be a classic case of too little too late. Since most former customers, once they left, are showing no interest in going back to cable TV again unless maybe it's free.

Better Alternatives to Cable

Today, many great streaming channels and Live TV services are popular. With companies like fubo TV, Philo, YouTube TV, Hulu Live, Dish, and others all offering a life streaming package that mimicked their cable TV offerings.

But this can be a slippery slope, because now we are seeing big cable up to their old tricks. With price increases on streaming TV channels coming at subscribers fast and furious.
