Google Is Adding Some Fun New Features for Version 12 of Android TV
With Android TV 12.0 Get Ready for a 4K UI, Refresh Rate Switching, Microphone and Camera Indicators & More
Here's What We Can Expect When Android TV 12.0 is Released
The Android 12.0 OS will be here soon and Google just announced some pretty nice new features that will be included with the software update.
Android TV is the operating system that powers several media streamers. While some you may never heard of, the most popular of the bunch by far is the Nvidia SHIELD TV. This media streamer dominates a pretty sizable chunk of market share.
With a new Android operating system update on the way, let's look at what to expect once it's released.
Improved Home Screen Resolution
Google improved the resolution of the Home Screen. While Android TV currently only supports up to 1080p resolution on the Home Screen, after the update it can be viewed in full 4K UHD. This should make the ad-box and content recommendation box which now takes up the top third of the Home Screen look even better on Android 4K and 8K Android Televisions.

User Level Refresh Rate Switching,
Another feature included in Android TV 12.0 OS is you can now change your screen refresh rate. While some media streamers, like the Nvidia SHEILD, allow refresh rate matching. It's not perfect and the new update comes with this ability for enhanced image processing for a nicer visual experience.
It will apps choose between several refresh rates like: 24fps, 25fps, 50fps, 60fps, to provide smoother video playback.
Wolfram Klein, Product Manager, of the Android TV OS said it will "Adjust content frame rate by a user setting that's been added to give users control over this feature."
Android TVs owners will now be notified via small icons in the top right corner of the screen when ever the microphone or camera has been activated by an app. You can also disable the camera and microphone as well as see which apps recently accessed them.
Android TV sets will have a better way to report display modes and make HDMI hot swapping more stable. App developers won't need to come up with their own solutions to accurately identify display modes or take care of HDMI hot plug events.
This Tunnel Mode update will make it easier for app developers to provide consistent and efficient video playback on all Android TV devices. The Android framework processing will be streamlined, with less demand placed upon it.
Currently, there is a beta developer version of Android TV OS 12.0 that is available. The eventual release won't be out until later this fall.
