For Many Nvidia SHIELD users, the Recent Update Ruined their SHIELD Experience
How to get rid of the ads and bloatware from your Nvidia newly updated SHIELD Home Screen
During a recent update, Google blasted SHIELD TV owners with Ads on their Home Screen
After many ad-free years, Nvidia SHIELD owners who spent $200 on their media streamer where shocked after a recent update to find their favorite streaming device had morphed into something that resembled a Fire TV virtually overnight.
The recent software update completely changed the look of the home screen on the Nvidia SHIELD. A third of the home screen is now serving up ads and channel content recommendations to subscription channels that aren't even subscribe to.
This really angered many SHIELD TV users, who took to social media to let their displeasure known. User review ratings tanked on the device across various platforms.
Just to be clear, Nvidia did not push this out. Google did through a recent update to their Google Play Store and Android TV Home Screen software. The good news is this can easily be turned off and it can make your SHIELD ad-free just like it always was. If enough user complain to Nvidia, they may even provide their own custom launcher without ads in a future update.
Turn Off the Home Screen Ads By Disabling Google Play
Adding a completely different launcher is certainly an option. But if you just want your clean Nvidia SHIELD home screen back without ads, this is the easiest solution.
Disable Google Play
Turning off Google Play is not without some drawbacks. You won't be able to sign-in to YouTube and use other apps that depend on this to work But it can quickly and easily be turned back on again if you need it. This also works on other Android TV media streamers where you would like a clean home screen without 30% dedicated to content you have no interest in.
To turn off ads do this:
1. Fron the SHIELD Settings menu go to > Apps > See All Apps > Show System Apps > Google Play Services.
2. Force Stop Google Play Services.
3. Disable Google Play Services then scroll to the top of the settings menu and restart your SHIELD TV.
This will do the trick, no more ads will be shown and your SHIELD TV, and your Home Screen will look like at always has. Your app shortcuts will need to be reset to the order you had them before.
Should you ever need to use Google Play for any reason, then follow these same three steps above and renable Google Play Services and restart your SHIELD.
Use a 3rd Party Launcher To Remove the Ads
Some SHIELD owners who use Google Play Services may not want to disable and enable this app and would rather install a 3rd party launcher instead. That is also another great alternative and the video below offers a nice guide on how to do this.
