OTA Channels are Moving
If you are lucky enough to receive free local over the air channels from an antenna, your favorite channel may disappear. Chances are it's not off the air for good, rather the channel has simply moved to a new location due to the FCC repack that's happening now.
Way back in August of 2016 the FCC auctioned off a chunk of the airwaves to be used by wireless companies.
This affected almost 1,000 local TV stations who would need to move their frequencies sometime between 2018-2020.
We are now in this window of time and stations that may have enjoyed the same allocated frequencies for many years are now being relocated to a different portion of the radio spectrum.
Only viewers who use an antenna to watch TV will be affected by this shift. Cable TV and satellite viewers will remain untouched by this repack.
At some point, your favorite local channel may no longer be viewable when you tune in.
If you happen to notice it missing, the fix is really quite simple.
Any device that has an OTA QAM tuner like your TiVo, HDHomeRun, and Televisions will need the channels rescanned to find your missing channels.
Just go into your device settings and go to "channels and simply rescan your channels. This can take several minutes or quite a bit longer depending on which scanning method you use.
Most devices offer a quick scan and an exhaustive scan. The quick scan is relatively fast as it scans for new channels that may have been added since last time.
The exhaustive scan is rather exhausting because you need to wait a really long time before it's finished. We recommend using this method though just not right before you want to sit down and watch your favorite show.
This will start from scratch and scan every frequency your tuner is capable of receiving and then add any channel it finds.
