Watch & Record Commercial Free HD TV
As a cable subscriber are you tired of all the commercials you need to sit through watching an hour episode of your favorite show? It's bad enough they charge an outrageous monthly bill for all those channels nobody ever watches. No monthly fee and commercial free, two reasons many cable cutters are building their own HTPC streaming media DVR.

Before you buy your next HTPC, take a look at the Mac Mini and HD HomeRun Network QAM tuner. Together, they provide an excellent combination to record over the air HD TV from an HD Antenna or clear unencrypted HD CATV. By adding the excellent Mac EyeTV software, you have everything needed for a commercial free HD DVR. Windows Media Center software will also great to record and time shift your favorite HD TV shows on a PC with HD Homerun. Learn more »

PATRIOT Xporter XT Rage High Speed Flash

Media Streamers, Roku, Netflix, Hulu Plus, USB Thumb Drive
While not every one has the benefit of owning a NAS or even a wireless network, the humble flash drive is an inexpensive way to transport media files from the computer to a media player or streamer. As far as flash drives go, there is a difference and a faster one means less time setting in front of a computer waiting for your files to transfer.

Patriot makes some of the fastest flash drives around and their new Xporter XT Rage is no slouch. With it's 27MB read and 25 MB/s write speed, it gives you the performance you need in a USB 2 device. It's rubber coating helps to protect it from moisture, and it's retractable design helps protect it while not in use. I have been extremely pleased with Patriot Memory products and this is another great product with excellent features in a nice package.

D-Link's Newest Media Streamer
D-Link Media Streamer, Vudu, Netflix, Roku
Better late than never, D-Link just released their budget media player that will be exclusively sold through Walmart. With it's $59 retail price, it may well prove to be a less costly alternative to put 1080p HD content on the big screen than both Roku and AppleTV. With both WiFi and Ethernet along with HDMI and Composite video, this little box may have what it takes to make a dent in the market share of Roku and Apple. While it sports a little larger footprint than both the Roku and AppleTV, it's lower price may make that easy to overlook. It's firmware interface called MovieNite gives you access to YouTube, VUDU, Netflix, and Pandora. They also offer a free MovieNite app for Android or iOS. It remains to be seen how well, or if it can stream mkv and avi content from a computer or NAS. With prices coming down on newly released 1080p streamers, hopefully it will put pressure on Apple and Roku to lower their prices as well which is always good news for consumers.

 Popcorn Hour C-300

Popcorn Hour, C-300
The Popcorn C-300 is the latest version of a line of media players from Popcorn Hour. This model supports an outstanding amount of video formats, and continues to be very popular even with it's higher price tag.  The C-300 offers plenty of connections like HDMI, Component video out, gigabit Ethernet, along with both optical and analog audio out for audio.
The small color screen displays media title along with album art for videos and music. The firmware has had most of the bugs worked out with the last version so this makes it a nice unit to compete with the higher end Dune HD models. Unfortunately a Blue-Ray player and hard drive are not included, so this can drive the cost up even further. While they are currently hard to come by and you need to be on a waiting list to get one,  when they become more available hopefully the price will drop.

Discontinued Roku LT Streaming Player

Roku, Jailbreak, Apple TV
If you are looking for the best $39 media player, you found it. From the popularity of the Roku LT, it seems not everyone wants to drink the Apple Kool-Aid.
Roku is selling a truck load of these and not only is it one of the lowest cost media player available, it offers many needed features while omitting some most people won't use. While the box is tiny, the remote is rather clunky, yet it is RF eliminating the need to point it at the device.  If you stream most of your media from a computer or NAS, look elsewhere. The Roku software is not the greatest for this purpose, although with plenty of aftermarket apps like Plex it can get the job done. If streaming media files is your primary need, a WD Live TV or a Jailbroken AppleTV 2 would be better suited for the job. The Roku LT is a great media streamer and with private channels a great way to get additional content to your TV.
