XBMC with Untethered Jailbreak for 2nd Gen Apple TV with iOS 5.11
Not much news on the jailbreak scene for the Apple TV 3. Sounds like it will be the hardest of all devices to jailbreak. Good news though for Apple TV 2 owners, There is now an untethered jailbreak for software iOS 5.3 available for your Apple TV 2.
This will give you access to XBMC, which is the best Media Center software available on your Apple TV.

What does "tethered" mean? It means whenever you turn off your device it will need to be hooked up to a Mac/PC computer every time you turn it on. If you have frequent power failures, an untethered jailbreak is the only way to go.
Here are some of the updated features in the latest version:
New Faster Visual Interface - Provides quicker access to all content.
National Geographic Screensaver - Beautiful photos built into the screensaver
iCloud Movie Purchases - Purchase movies and play them from AppleTV or iCloud
Partner Signup - Sign up from your AppleTV using you device ID to add partner content.
Content Recommendations - Based on your past iTunes viewing history.
Be sure to check the plugins below to see if your plugin is supported. Some authors have not yet updated their plugins for iOS 5.

Untethered Jailbreak Instructions for iOS 5.3 for AppleTV 2
· Step 1 – Download and install Seas0nPass for Mac [10.6 or later] or Windows [XP or Later] Update iTunes to the latest version.
(if you are running the tethered version you will need to jailbreak again)
· Step 2 – Unzip and Launch the App. Select the “Create IPSW” button. This will download official IPSW from Apple and inject with Jailbroken files
· Step 3 – When prompted, connect your Apple TV using a micro-USB cable. (leave power disconnected) Once the light on the front of the Apple TV begins to flash rapidly, point the silver remote, (white one won't work) at the Apple TV and hold both the MENU and PLAY/PAUSE buttons for 7 seven seconds.
· Step 4 – iTunes will open automatically and start the restore process.
· Step 5 – iTunes will confirm the restore when complete – your Apple TV is now ready for a tethered boot.
· Step 6 – Disconnect the ATV from your computer’s USB cable for a brief moment
· Step 7 – Open Seas0nPass again and choose “Boot Tethered”
· Step 8 – When prompted, connect the Apple TV to your computer via USB. Wait for the rapid flashing light then connect the power. Once both are connected hold both the ‘MENU’ and ‘PLAY/PAUSE’ buttons for 7 seven seconds.
· Step 9 –iTunes will notify you when your Apple TV has been completely restored. Verify your Apple TV is Jailbroken by verifying the Fire Core icon is in lower right hand corner of the screen.

Step 2 – Start the nito installer app you downloaded
Step 3 – Select and press the "Install XBMC" button.
