Strike Resolved: Hollywood Actors Union Board Greenlights Game-Changing Agreement
Good News For TV Viewers Everywhere After the Actors' Strike Finally Settled After Months of Talks
This past Friday, leaders from Hollywood's actors union approved a deal with studios, officially ending a nearly four-month-long strike. Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the executive director, and chief negotiator, happily announced at a news conference that the tentative agreement received an impressive 86% approval from the board.
The union announced a groundbreaking deal surpassing the remarkable milestone of $1 billion U.S. dollars. This comprehensive agreement encompasses elevated minimum salaries, introduces an innovative "streaming participation" bonus, and fortifies protections against the unauthorized replication of their members' images and voices by artificial intelligence.
Members to Vote Next
The next crucial step involves a vote by the union's members, set to begin on Tuesday and extend into December. These members, who spent the summer and early fall on picket lines instead of on film and television sets, are eagerly anticipating the results.
Sustaining the Industry
Emphasizing the significance of the three-year contract, Crabtree-Ireland highlighted its role in sustaining the motion picture industry as a profession for working-class performers.
SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher added a touch of humor, noting the studios' attempt to outlast actors by waiting more than two months before initiating talks. With a laugh, she questioned, "What were they doing? Were they trying to smoke us out? Well, honey, I quit smoking a long time ago."
While details about those who disapproved of the deal remain vague, Crabtree-Ireland and Drescher did not delve into specifics. The weighted board vote leaves it unclear how many people were against approval.
Interestingly, actors can resume work even before the official ratification. Crabtree-Ireland mentioned, "In fact, some of them already have."
Deal Breaker: Artificial Intelligence Control
The final sticking points of the agreement involved contract provisions related to the control of artificial intelligence. Drescher emphasized the importance of this aspect, stating, "AI was a dealbreaker. If we didn’t get that package, then what are we doing to protect our members?
