Best Roku Tips and Tricks for Maximum Enjoyment
Roku Tweaks for Ultimate Perfomance!
If you are brand new to Roku, you're probably already in awe of all the amazing things it can do. For very little money it can help you shave hundreds off an annual cable TV bill. Or watch unlimited free and paid streaming TV content from a wide range of sources.
These Roku tips and tricks will make your Roku even more enjoyable.
Remap Shortcut Buttons on Your Roku Remote Control
On certain Roku models that include a Voice Remote Pro, it includes two customizable buttons as shown in the photo above. These buttons can be programmed to not only open any Roku channel you want. They can also be programmed as a handy shortcut to open an individual show's next episode you may be binge-watching at the moment.
How To Program The Two Shortcut Buttons on a Roku Voice Remote Pro
On the Roku Voice Remote Pro, Press and Hold the #1 or #2 shortcut button for 5 seconds. Then an onscreen menu will show several shortcut options:
1. Channel: Launch your favorite channel (e.g., HBO Max or Hulu)
2. The Roku Channel: Launch The Roku Channel
3. Live TV Guide: Launch Live TV Guide to quickly start browsing live streaming TV channels 4. Sleep timer: If you have a Roku TV, the sleep timer lets you power off the TV screen after a designated amount of time
5. Closed Captions: Turn on closed captioning
6. Voice command (or Last voice command): Save a voice command for specific tasks like searching for a movie or TV series, or playing a musical artist or genre. Anything listed in Roku’s voice-command dictionary can be added using this menu.
Choose and highlight the shortcut and press the OK button on the Roku remote to select and set it to the shortcut button. This will assign a custom shortcut to that button. Until you change it, you can press the #1, or #2 shortcut button to access your programmed shortcut.
There are no limits on how many times you can use this feature to assign new shortcuts. So have fun with it, it can be a real timesaver once you get used to using it.
Use Your Phone as a Roku Remote Control
Download the Roku app onto your phone and change the channel, and volume, or use it to search for and add new channels. You can also use the phone app to send Roku's audio to headphones connected to the app on your phone. You can also use your phone to type in searches on Roku instead of using the onscreen remote on your TV screen.
Watch Fewer Ads on Roku
While this trick won't work on every Roku model, it may be worth giving it a try to remove some ads.
Step 1. Use your Roku remote to Access Secret Menu 2.
Step 2. On your remote press, the Home 4X then Press Right, Down, Left, and Up.
Step 3. Choose “Cycle Home Screen Ad Banner Server” then click ok until it changes to “Staging 2.”
Step 4. Press Home one more time to exit.
Step 5. If it worked, you'll see the ads replaced with a nice blank box.
Use a Web Browser on Roku
Roku or Apple TV won't let you use a browser on their media players. But you can still easily watch content online from your phone or tablet with Roku using either Screen Mirroring, AirPlay, or Casting. This takes the audio and video that's playing on your phone and will place it on your TV screen in full HD, and it works fantastic.

Enhance Your Roku Sound
There's nothing worse than watching a TV show and not being able to hear what's being said and constantly needing to turn the volume up or down. Except maybe watching TV with someone else who's hard of hearing and constantly asking "What did they say?"
Not only is this distracting for the person who can't hear, but it's also distracting for anyone watching that has to constantly explain what's happening in the movie or show.
But there are a few things you can do to end this nightmare once and for all. Starting with the Free solution follow these steps to level the sound so it does not get louder and softer.
On your, Roku Home Screen navigate to the settings menu on the left side and scroll to and Open “Advanced Sound Settings.” Then select the “Leveling” option to level the audio. There are two additional sub-options. The “Night” variant, slightly amplifies the softer scenes and dampens down the louder outbursts. Many Roku users find this one does the best.
While changing these settings will help, it won't help those with limited hearing. But in extreme cases, an even better solution is to attach a set of wireless headphones to your television.
They make headphones specifically designed for this purpose, and the best we found by far are made by Sennheiser. Now they are very expensive, but these can be found on eBay, often for less than 50% of the retail cost.
Not only do these headphones work amazingly, but they will also pretty much eliminate 98% of "What Did They Say?" questions.
