It's Time for an Nvidia Shield TV Hardware Refresh
Our favorite Android Streaming Box is Getting Tired
We have not seen much in the way of anything new for the Nividia SHIELD TV now for several years.
The last models built in 2015 and 2017 are still receiving software updates. Which is unheard of when it comes to most Android Streaming boxes.
The last hardware update we've seen for the SHIELD was in 2019, which was really pretty minor. So it's time for another new Nvidia SHIELD model to make an appearance.
With a new AV1 codec out, we were hoping for news of an announcement by Nvidia that they were going to release a refresh this fall. But COVID and the economy shutting down has no doubt left a damper on it and many other new products that would have been on track to be released this year.
But a new faster SHIELD with Nvidia's newer Tegra processor is on the wish list for many Nvidia fans. Especially now that Apple, which just released a new faster Applet TV just one year later after they released its last model is on the way in November.
More Storage - Apple TV doubled its available storage from last year's model and reduced the price. The SHIELD also desperately needs more storage and the price is now way too high. A top-of-the-line Apple TV 4K models with 128GB of memory is now going to sell for $150, and the new processor is almost 2X as fast as the model it replaced. Read more about the new Apple TV here...
When it comes to performance, the Apple TV 4K media streamer was the only one that could go head-to-head with the SHIELD. Now that the new one is due out in November, it looks like it may be leaving the SHIELD in its dust.
Several buggy Android updates have also hurt the SHIELD's performance. With some of the latest ones causing it to run slower. Hopefully, a new hardware refresh can address this, and make the SHIELD the performance champ it once was.
With the holidays quickly approaching, a new SHIELD is sure to be on the wish list of many of Nvidia's fans. We can only hope Nvidia delivers a new model for Christmas, otherwise, a lump of coal in the stocking will be sure to disappoint its faithful fans.
