Fix Drifing Game Controller Sticks

This Guide will help you fix game controller thumb sticks (drifting, etc.) It was shared in a SHIELD Subreddit and it is the fix you need if your gaming controller is not giving you precise tracking during gameplay.
There is an issue where the manufacturer of the controller board didn't wash away the Flux used for soldering the components. This is what causes drifting/only working horizontally or vertically. Debris can also impede the functionality of the potentiometers in the thumb stick modules.

This is a "quick" guide for fixing this issue. the OP has done this with have done two different Shield controllers, and they have worked like a charm ever since.

NOT RECOMMENDED TO DO THIS IF YOU HAVE AN ACTIVE WARRANTY, AS THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

These Instructions are for The Nvidia SHIELD Controller - Other Controllers may be similar or a little different so before you attempt to take them apart be sure to view a YouTube tear-down video for your particular game controller.

Step 1. Disassemble the controller by screwing out the six Torx screws on the backside of the controller and pry the two halves apart and plug out the battery. Be careful not to break any clips.

Step 2. Remove the two screws holding down the board with the analog sticks. Unplug the cable that is connected to the board, do NOT pull directly on the leads(easy to dislodge from contacts), and wiggle it out.

Step 3. Remove the thumb sticks by pulling them off. Get some 99% isopropyl alcohol and put it in a container. Put the board into the container and make sure the board is completely submerged. Recommended to wear gloves at this point.

Step 4. After it has been lying in there for 5 minutes, pick the board up and start moving the sticks around. This will get rid of any debris or flux stuck to/in between affected areas. Put it back in and let it rest in the container for about 5 more minutes.

Step 5. After five minutes have passed, take the board out of the container and move around the sticks again. After that, give it a quick dip in the container and proceed to dry it. Isopropyl alcohol evaporates quickly, so give it a few minutes.

You can now put the thumb sticks back on. After it has dried, proceed to assemble the controller again by following steps 1 and 2 In reverse.

Enjoy!
