DirecTV Lost 400,000 High Paying Customers Last Quarter

Big losses continue to mount across satellite TV and cable television platforms

DirecTV Subsriber Losses

NextTV reported according to "Leichtman Research Group estimates, DirecTV lost approximatly 400,000 customers across its DirecTV satellite, DirecTV virtual and U-verse TV platforms in the second quarter."

Former King Of Subscription Television

DirecTV once the king of subscription television is in a tailspin as subscriber losses continue to mount. At last count, their subscriber base has now dropped below 14 million. In the second quarter of 2022 alone, the satellite company lost 2 million paying customers.
Meanwhile, many streaming companies are also seeing record subscriber losses.

Former Paying Customers Running to Free Programming with Ads in Record Numbers

This only makes sense, as many Americans and others around the globe are facing high inflation. The higher cost of basic necessities like food, clothing, and gas made a serious dent in household budgets. And nonessential items are now easily being cut to try and keep afloat in these turbulent economic times.

What Does the Future Hold for DirecTV

You don't need a fortune teller gazing into a crystal ball to see things are not looking like roses and unicorns for DirecTV, and other corded and cordless streaming content providers.

Unless we see a drastic improvement in consumer spending power soon, this trend will only continue and possibly accelerate even more. DirecTV's Sunday Ticket contract is expiring, and when it does the losses could only increase. But it could boost the bottom line by not needing to pay 1.5 billion annually for the privilege.

Many rural customers still depend on DirecTV. Streaming is not an option for them since high-speed data providers are not always available.
But Elon Musk's SpaceX Starlink Broadband Satellite service is helping to put a dent in the lack of availability of rural highspeed broadband. But the initial $500 dollars for the hardware is still a barrier to admission for many potential rural customers. So while DirecTV subscriber losses may continue. The pace may eventually slow down and could even come to a halt.
At least for the near term until faster broadband becomes more wildly available. Or until the next big price increase...
