Tablo Sunsetting Lifetime Guide

Tablo Sunsetting Lifetime Guide for New Subscribers

After August 30, 2022, New Tablo Subscribers Can No Longer Buy a Lifetime Guide

Tablo Lifetime Guide Sunset Date

Tablo has offered the Lifetime Guide for their DVRs since they first launched in 2014. But they recently announced that they are sunsetting this feature after August 30. Current Lifetime TV Guide Data Service subscribers and those who purchase a subscription before the cutoff date will be able to continue using their guide and will remain unaffected.

A Word Of Warning from Tablo for Existing Monthly and Annual Guide Subscribers

If you want to get in on a lifetime sub for their TV guide, and you cancel your monthly or annual subscription early. But if you contact Tablo customer service during this, they will make an allowance to this policy and give you a credit towards the purchase of the Lifetime TV Guide service.

This only affects network-connected Tablo models. Because TV-connected models were not eligible for a Lifetime TV Guide since November of 2020. And if you already own or are planning on purchasing a Tablo DUAL HDMI model, you have until August 29, 2022, to purchase their Lifetime Guide for your DVR. After this date, you can only buy a monthly or annual subscription.

Here's The Difference Between Network Connected and TV Connected Tablo DVRs

A TV-connected Tablo DVR connects directly to your television set with an HDMI cable, much like a DVD player or media streamer. To use it you need to use the included remote control and switch to the HDMI input to which the Tablo device is connected.

A Network connected Tablo is attached to your Router or a Network Switch with an Ethernet cable. Since it does not come with a remote, you need to download and use their app which works on media streamers like Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast with Google TV, Nvidia SHIELD, and Fire TV.

You can also use a networked Tablo to watch recorded over-the-air shows from an antenna on Smart TVs, Computers, Android and iOS Tablets, and Phones.

The advantage is you can watch your recordings from connected compatible devices anywhere in your home network. You can get either two or four tuners and some models feature onboard storage so you don't need to connect an external USB drive

Here's How Much Tablo TV Guide Service Costs?

Is a Tablo Guide Subscription Necessary?

The short answer is it depends. If you were comfortable setting a manual recording time on a VCR, you can easily do so without their TV guide and save the cost of a subscription. It also depends on how much recording you plan on doing from your antenna. If you only plan on recording a couple of shows every time they air this can easily be set up without their TV guide.

Their guide looks ahead 14 days and lets you choose shows to record faster than entering them in manually. But you can use a free TV guide like Titan TV, to find times and dates of shows to record as well. This takes a few extra steps and is not as nice as using the Tablo guide which is more convenient, but it will save you some much-needed cash. Or use the money to subscribe to a 4K streaming service like AppleTV+ which is $5 a month.

You then have the option to download your recordings to a PC, NAS, or mobile device. It works really well and you can record in either 720p or 1080p for credits that you pre-purchase for as low as 18 cents each.

This is perfect for those that only occasionally need to use a DVR.
