ANDROID 13 Could Make Your Smart TV Use Less Energy and Data Bandwidth
When it comes to saving energy, sometimes little things can add up and make a big difference
This November when Google releases another brand new version of Android TV, your Smart TVs may get a little smarter when it comes to the amount of energy and data they use.
Android TV 13 To Add a Lower Power Standby Mode
When the Android TV 13 update is released, a new Low Power Standby Mode will be included. While it may not make a huge difference on your electricity bill, especially if you only own one Android Smart TV. But when you multiply this amount times hundreds of thousands of Android TVs sold all over the world, it can make a much larger impact.
Let's look at this in a different way. Say your kids want to sell lemonade at a lemonade stand outside your home. And they made 50 cents profit on every lemonade sold. On a very busy Saturday, they sold 30 glasses of lemonade and ended up with a profit of $15. Good for them. Now if instead of selling lemonade directly, they offered the digital recipe for World-Class Home Made Lemonade on the Internet along with information to help kids successfully start their own lemonade business. And let's say they made 15 sales in one day and sold the recipes for $2.00 each. That would net them a nice profit of $30 and it would keep making them money every day thereafter.
Energy-saving works much the same way. The amount of energy savings you gain by making just one device use a little less power may seem insignificant. But scale this up to a million, and it helps the entire world use a sizeable chunk less energy. Now multiply this number times 365 days a year and the savings can add up to be rather significant.
Google plans on reducing energy and bandwidth consumption on its smart TVs by disabling wakelocks. This lets Android TVs sleep a little deeper without frequent wake up interuptions from apps that want to phone home all the time. And by restricting apps from constantly accessing the network when the device is not active, it saves both energy and it also uses less data. This will make those who have to live with data caps, a lot happier.
Every Smart Device Should Be Doing This
As more Smart Devices enter our every day lives in the form of connected appliances, digital assistants, smart cameras, doorbells, thermostats and more. Enrgy savings should always be a priority, instead of an afterthought. By designing these devices to use minimal energy and bandwidth, it would have a huge impact on our planet.
There are two ways to go about saving energy. Either find lower-cost ways to produce it, or reduce demand so there is more energy available to go around. Scarcity is what drives the price of energy and everything else up. Making everyday appliances use less energy will ensure there is plenty of energy to go around. Which ultimately helps us all.
