Plex NVIDIA Shield Users Here's How to Fix Excessive buffering, 4K lag, Errors, & Other Issues
A Nvidia Shield is an incredible Android streaming box, but sometimes issues arise
Plex is a great way to share content with others, or watch your own. With a beautifully designed interface, Plex is a popular media center app on the SHIELD platform.
But some Nvidia SHIELD owners using Plex are experiencing random errors, excessive buffering, 4K lag, and some other issues when using Plex Media Server. While no official fix for this has been forthcoming, one Reddit r/Plex member says they found a solution that can fix some of these annoyances when using the app on a SHIELD TV box.
Reddit users are complaining the SHIELD TUBE struggles with extensive buffering and lag, when playing 4K HDR content. And there is an ongoing debate with both sides pointing fingers at the recently updated Plex app, and the SHIELD TUBE itself as the source of the recurring problems.
"All of my users/clients with Roku devices have no issues, Plex on iOS, no issues, Plex for Kodi Add-On, flawless (running on the said Shield), and lastly Web playback runs just fine. I am left to believe there is an issue with the current release. The problem is, I’ve sideloaded Plex versions back to 8.19.3 and still experience the same issues."
Rolling back software does cast suspicion on the SHIELD TUBE as the responsible culprit. But rolling back software does not always mean it rolled every single file back. Initially, neither Plex, or Nvidia have offered a solution. But this bit of news recently provided by Plex in the subreddit may shed some light on this issue.
"We have identified:
1. The frames are flowing when play is clicked – evidenced by the audio
2. Video is not displaying until the first Key frame is encountered.
3. The first frame being sent is the key frame so the error is deeper.
4. This is where investigation is now."
Plex Nvidia SHIELD User Tip
Here is what one Reddit r/Plex user did to keep the video in sync with audio on the Shield.
"My current solution when resuming media after walking away (and the screensaver appearing) is to hit play and then seek back 10 seconds to get the audio and video back in sync. Otherwise, the video remains paused until the audio catches up.
This has been an issue for a while now and is really frustrating to deal with. I have to pause pretty regularly because I have a little one that I care for and their needs obviously come first."
So while this may not be as neat a solution as an updated Plex app that addresses these issues. It is something that will make the Plex app more usable on a Nvidia SHIELD.
