Disney Could Pass Up Netflix in 2022
Netflix has had ten years to grow their streaming service Disney only started theirs in November 2019
Disney and Netflix both have powerful streaming platforms. And while Netflix has been going at it strongly for ten years now, it took Disney a lot longer to get off the fence and start their own Disney+ competing platform. Now, in the short two years they have been at it, they are doing something many in the industry thought would never be possible. They are coming close to catching a tiger by its tail.
Disney has been at this far longer than Netflix and their content library is vast. With a major and extremely popular cable TV channel, Disney was hesitant to jump feet first into the streaming TV market place. But it's a good thing they did because their steaming platform has really taken off. From the time they launched Disney+ in November 2019, until now they have amassed 118+ million subscribers. Netflix in comparison currently has 214 million subscribers worldwide. But it took Netflix over ten years to accomplish this milestone.
It's hard to predict if 2022 will be the year that Disney passes up Netflix in total subscribers. But if they keep releasing great original content, which is what is in store later in 2022. Disney+ could eaisly have another record-breaking year.
2022 Could Be the Year Disney+ Becomes the Number One Streaming Service
Cable TV subscribers are still cutting the cord in record numbers. And while many cable channels are hardly worth watching, the Disney channel remains popular among cord cutters. And with the cable TV industry predicted to lose another 5 million more subscribers in 2022. Disney may pick up many more subscribers who love their kid friendly content, and popular adult Sci-Fi TV series and movies.
The Biggest Difference Between Disney and Netflix
What may help Netflix and hurt Disney is how they treat popular new original content. Netflix will release original movies directly on their platform for their 214 million subscribers to enjoy. Disney instead releases their new movies first to movie theaters. While this may bring in more revenue for the company, it could impact their streaming platform's future growth.
But at some point we may see more streaming giants adopting the Netflix approach. With simultaneous releases for both the movie theaters and also for streaming platforms.
Another thing Disney+ has going for it is their monthly cost. It only costs $80 or $8/month for a Disney+ subscription. And this includes streaming content in full 4K. Netflix costs a lot more to stream in content in 4K. A 4K Netflix subscription will set you back $15.99 per month, which is double the cost of Disney+.
As streaming TV becomes more expensive every year, more people will cancel their expensive Netflix subs in favor of Disney+ and Apple TV+ or Paramount+ which offers even more content for the same price.
So if current trends continue, even if Disney+ does not overtake Netflix as the number one streaming TV service in 2022. It won't take them very much longer to catch up and maybe one day they will overtake Netflix.
