ROKU May Lose YouTube Channel in December
The War Ramps up Again Between Roku and Google
With Roku and Google locking horns over a privacy and search dispute on their platform. The YouTube app may be the next to be removed from the Roku platform with Google threating to remove their YouTube app December 9th.
Earlier this year, Roku banned the live YouTube TV app from its media streamers. YouTube responded by letting Roku users' access YouTube TV from its on demand free YouTube app. But they could not subscribe directly from this app or on Roku and instead had to visit the YouTube TV website to sign-up to the live streaming channel.
Now, after several more months, the war once again has escalated and now with Google threating to take away the YouTube app off the Roku Platform.
Roku addressed this in a blog post which we recommend you can read here.
"Importantly, our concerns with Google are not about money. We have not asked for a single change in the financial terms of our existing agreement. In fact, Roku does not earn a single dollar from YouTube’s ad supported video sharing service today, whereas Google makes hundreds of millions of dollars from the YouTube app on Roku.
There are two primary concerns we are working to address: First, Google continues to interfere with Roku’s independent search results, requiring that we preference YouTube over other content providers. This is a concern shared by many companies who believe that customers deserve neutral and relevant results in their search queries. Second, Google discriminates against Roku by demanding search, voice, and data features they do not insist on from other streaming platforms."
Disputes as important as they are to the parties involved ultimately always hurt consumers. By losing content they love, it may force them to choose alternative platforms to seek out this content. There is always the risk some users may leave the Roku platform after adopting another streaming platform they may like even more.
But you have to respect Roku for standing fast to their principles. Roku is the David against Goliath in this battle. Hopefully, it all works out in the end with both Roku and Google ironing out their differences. This will allow Roku users to enjoy YouTube and YouTube live TV content on their Roku media streamers.
