Recently an Annoying Change in Location Message has Been Popping Up for YouTube TV users

Fix YouTube TV 'Outside Your Home Area' alert

The YouTube Outside Your Home Area message pop-up is typically reserved for users who try to use YouTube TV outside their home network. It was a safeguard put in place for several reasons.

1. To prevent hackers from accessing your YouTube TV account.
2. To keep YouTube TV subscribers from sharing their login credentials outside their home network with friends and family across the country.

Unfortunately, something broke and now many users report that this annoying message pops up on Roku and Android streaming devices. Even though they never left their home network.

When this message appears, a black screen with a message pops up that says you are outside your area, and you won't be able to watch until you return to your home area. Then when clicking the box that says "I'm in my home area," a spinning wheel shows up on the screen while waiting for your device and then it just keeps spinning with nothing else happening.

For anyone paying the high price to stream live TV $64.99/month and dealing with this bogus error out of the blue, is very frustrating. This is definitely something Google implemented which affects many streaming devices and these include:
  • Amazon Fire TV Stick
  • Chromecast
  • Google TV
  • Nvidia Shield
  • Roku
  • Various Smart TVs

4. Then on this device navigate to Icon for your user Profile -> Location -> Current Playback Area -> Update

It may require several attempts to rid this error. But if it does not fix it, there is another thing you can try that may eliminate this annoying message pop-up.

If the above steps didn't work, Enable 2-factor authentication:

You must do this using only a mobile phone or tablet. Visit this website tv.youtube.com/verify and then verify your home location.

Hopefully, one of these two methods gets rid of the Outside Your Area message and you can continue watching YouTube TV. If not, be sure to visit the YouTube bug tracking page and see if Google released any new fixes. And be sure to submit your own bug report.

The more people that complain, the sooner Google will fix this issue for good.

Just recently Google has made release several updates to it's app that addressed this issue, but the company warns that if you often use YouTube TV outside your home area on a different device this could be why their app keeps asking you to update your location.

Here is Google's Out of Area support page that may offer some additional tips.
