Winegard Freevision Best Indoor TV Antenna
Now that Locast is no more, many cord cutters are scrambling to find a replacement
While Locast was nice, its signal quality could never come close to the crystal clear 1080p HD picture you can receive from an antenna
Locast filled a need for a wide swath of cord cutters around the country. Now, with their sudden demise, an OTA TV antenna may be your best alternative for watching local broadcast TV channels.
An antenna compared to Locast has some pretty nice advantages.
- An antenna provides a much clearer, higher quality signal than Locast. You will receive channels in 1080p HD uncompressed. In fact, the picture quality from HD local channels received from the antenna will even look better than cable or satellite.
- There is no nag ware or additional fees to pay every month once you pay for an antenna. Locast claimed to be nonprofit, but then they would interrupt your programming every 15minutes with a donate commercial only turning this off once you donated.
- A TV antenna will keep working even when Locast may experience technical difficulties, or go out of business like when they recently shut off their service across the country due to a recent lawsuit that did not go the way they planned.
Antennas also have some downsides, like distance and barrier limitations, tall buildings, metal roofs, trees, and hills can all mess up the signal.
But if you are close enough to a TV transmission tower, a high-quality table top antenna is all that you may need to receive major local network stations like CBS, ABC, NBC, PBS, FOX, CW, and more.
With TV antennas, a rule of thumb is to go big, and install it as high on a roof or attic as possible. But not everyone has this option. An excellent alternative is to use a smaller indoor antenna that will still receive some great local HD channels.
