Cord Cutters Spending Almost $100 on OTT Streaming TV Services

The Cost of Streaming Keeps Creeping Higher and Higher

Cord-Cutters paying more for OTT

One of the driving forces for cord cutters was cost, now cord cutters are once again facing more price increases

Parks Associates, a research firm, announced recently that on average cord-cutters spend $85 per month for streaming TV services they subscribe to. This is still approximately $35 less than what a typical cable TV subscription costs.

The Parks Associates study determined that nearly half (47%) of cord-cutters have subscribed to four or more OTT services.

The streaming TV market in not as simple as it once was. In the past, you could sign up to Netflix for $12-$15 and have an enormous selection of content to stream. This made it simple to cut the cord and watch what amounted to an endless supply of TV content.

Now we have many services to choose from, but this comes at an additional cost. Content providers removed their content from Netflix in order to offer their own streaming channels and apps. While more profitable, it now makes it more expensive for cord cutters to seek their content from multiple sources.

This is primarily why the free TV apps on Android are so popular. They offer one stop viewing of everyone's content for free. And if you install a modded app, it's completely ad free.

The Streaming TV Market Needs A Low Cost TV Platform That offers Everyone's Content

With the cost of streaming TV increasing, it will drive many more cord cutters to look for less legal ways to watch TV. The industry needs to do some serious soul searching and figure out a way to replicate what the pirate apps are doing and offer one stop viewing at a price that's too good to pass up.

This would take a coordinated effort, but the current model seems to be counterproductive. Cord cutters are not sticking long term with content providers, rather they are bouncing between providers. You can say what you want about cable TV, but one thing they did extremely well was to use their platform to bring all the various content together with an easily searchable guide. Their biggest problem besides the exurbanite cost was most of their content was not worth watching.

There is a saying that says: "Those that don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it." So if they want to keep cord cutters from seeking less than legal alternatives, offering an affordable service that combines many providers may be the best solution in the long run.

Constant price increases will only help speed up this process.
