Here's How HBO Max, Peacock, and Others Can Deal With Subscriber Churn
Launching a New Streaming Service is All Fun and Games Until The Party's Over
Subscriber Churn More Prevalent with Cord Cutters
Back in the good old days for cable TV and satellite companies, or once upon a time when Netflix was the only subscription TV streaming service available, subscriber churn was not much of an issue.
Now with a brand new streaming TV service launched almost every other month and prices climbing across the board, subscribers canceling their subscriptions in search of greener pastures is a genuine issue.
Even though Netflix has held onto many of their subscribers during the pandemic, and HBO Max is killing it on new subscribers with their service finally available on popular media streamers like Roku.
They too will have to deal with a fickle subscriber base as the early bird discounts wear thin.
Subscriber churn can be a real problem for content providers, here are several incentives to keep streaming TV subscribers.
Here's What Streaming TV Content Providers Can Do to Reduce Subscriber Churn
Subscriber churn can be a real problem for content providers, here are several incentives to keep streaming TV subscribers.
- Offer existing or long-term customers the same discount as new subscribers. Apple did it right, they offered everyone who purchased one of their products a complimentary one-year subscription to their Apple TV+ streaming service. Then they extended it first by a few months, then to 7 months past the initial year for no extra charge. Not every company has the bank account to make this possible, but if you are raising prices on existing customers, they could very well offer them the same discount for a limited time new subscribers receive.
- Unlock limited content the longer you stay with the provider. Seniority should come with certain perks. What if Amazon Prime Video did not charge long-term customer for some movies that newer customers had to pay extra for? It would not cost them much more, and if it keeps subscribers from jumping ship to another service, they may like better, they would not risk losing a long time subscriber.
- While the first two were carrots, here comes the stick. As much as we hate it, you can bet some execs are already thinking about it. Charging a service reactivation fee may cause some cord cutters a reason to hold off canceling their service. But this could also backfire, as some will simply not want to return unless there is a compelling reason, like exceptional content they can't find elsewhere.
Free TV Channels and Apps Are Another Reason Some Choose to Cancel Their Account
Streaming TV channels and apps that are Free, outnumber paid streaming services by a lot. Many are as good and offer just as much content as their subscription based competitors.
With the cost of cord cutting going higher each year, the Free channels are becoming even more important for many families. Especially as they need to work harder to make their dollars stretch further.
