Fire TV Vs Roku Vs Nvidia SHIELD

Best Alternatives to a Fire TV

The Fire TV Media Streamer Works Well for The Price But There Are Better Media Streamers Available

Fire TV - The Fire TV is not a bad media streamer. It's one many people turn to when first cutting the cord because it has some good things going for it. It's built and sold by Amazon so it has some good name recognition. And it does a reasonably good job with apps like Kodi, and other 3rd party apps that offer a lot of free TV content.

But it also has a few shortcomings. It's made and sold by Amazon which means it was designed to get you to buy more content from their store and Amazon most likely knows everything you do with your device.
They have installed additional software or shall we say bloatware. This means more resources are devoted to tracking your online streaming and buying habits. The Fire TV hardware is also not anywhere close as powerful as the top dog Android TV box the Nvidia SHIELD.

Fire TV Vs Roku Vs Nvidia SHIELD

NVIDIA SHIELD - This is our favorite Android media streamer. It comes from a company we trust, and when they built it they made it future proof. This means you don't need to update it with a new model like you do with most Android media players when new Android software is released.

While the hardware may be a little overkill for streaming alone, it will play anything you ask of it without skipping a beat.

The SHIELD runs on Android TV. This operating system was designed exclusively for a media streamer that's attached to a TV. Unlike most other less expensive Android streaming boxes use a version of the Android Phone OS. Which requires juggling between a mouse, and touchpad/keyboard because it was designed for a touch screen instead of for the remote control.

Like a Fire TV, the Nvidia SHIELD can also install apps from unknown sources in addition to the official Android TV app store. This means Kodi and other apps can easily be used. And it does a wonderful job playing any content with its supercharged hardware specs.

High quality comes with a price. Expect to pay several times more for a SHIELD than a Fire TV. But the build quality and factory support mean you could have a media streamer that may still be with you five years from now. So when you factor in the cost of upgrading other media players every two years, it will make the SHIELD seem like a bargain.

ROKU - A Roku is a media streamer that deserves its own HDMI port. We love the wide range of content available from the Roku channel store, and also the long list of Uncertified Private Roku channels.

One thing Roku has going for it when compared to Android media streamers is it's easier to use. Using a Roku is super intuitive, and anyone will feel comfortable learning to use one in minutes.

There are Roku models competitively priced to compete with a Fire TV. And their most expensive model the Roku Ultra is less than $100. A Roku is a great all-around media streamer and also a great alternative to a Fire TV.&

If you want a choose from the massive amount of content available, it's hard to beat. For watching full-length adult movies, in 4K, there is also none better than Roku.

If you are looking to upgrade to something better than a Fire TV, you can't go wrong with a Roku Ultra or Nvidia SHIELD.
