Verizon's Stream TV Android Streamer Launched With No Netflix Support
New Box Rumored to Be Similar to An Xiaomi Mi Box
With Verizon Now Offering Their Own Stream TV Box Many Users Are Disappointed By the Lack of Netflix Support
Now that the Verizon Stream TV box is available to order, we have a few more details on what this box will offer their customers.
Like most TV providers that relied on cable TV packages to money and have been losing customers to streaming TV. Verizon thought it may be a good idea to sell a branded media streamer of their own.
They chose a modified Android TV OS to run their new streamer. Here are some basic specs on their new Android TV box.
- Max Video Resolution: - 4K
- Operating System: - Android 9
- Memory for Apps and File Storage: - 8 GB
- RAM - 2 GB
- CPU - ARM Quad-Core Processor
- Dimensions: 5.00 × 4.00 × 0.87 in.
- Verizon Branded - Verizon's Red V printed on top of the box and on the remote.
Netflix Not Yet Supported
While a Mi Box comes with Netflix support and even includes a Netflix shortcut button right on their remote. Strangely, Netflix is absent on the Verizon Stream TV Android box.
For some reason Netflix is not yet supported on their Stream TV and won't even run if downloaded and added. And for no good reason, unless maybe Netflix did not "cough" up enough money to get their short-cut button printed on the remote?
Verizon even covered this in their instructional guide.
"Why am I getting an error message once I try and obtain the Netflix app?
Netflix shouldn't be supported on your Stream TV system right now."
Hopefully, at a later date if they can come to some kind of "Arraignment" we will see Netflix on this box as it should have been from launch.
How Much Does the Verizon Stream TV Cost?
5g Subscribers when Verizon now available only in limited markets will receive their Stream TV box Free. Anyone else will need to pay $70 dollars to purchase the Stream TV Android TV Box directly from Verizon. Free 2/day shipping is included. And even if you are not a Verizon customer you can still buy it.
With Verizon 5G only available in Huston, Los Angeles, Chicago, Sacramento, and Indianapolis the rest of the country may need to wait awhile before scoring an Android Stream TV Box for free.
Should You Buy One Now?
With the lack of Netflix support and Verizon running their own version of Android OS early adopters may be better served buying a Mi Box or Nvidia SHIELD instead.
They both run the full Android TV OS, with none of the limitation or privacy concerns that could come with using a proprietorial Verizon Android TV box.
The brand-new Mi Box S can be bought for as little as $63 With Free Shipping on eBay.
A Nvidia SHIELD Pro will cost a lot more than either the Stream TV or Mi Box S, but the performance of the SHIELD is off the charts in comparison. And currently, no other Android box can compare.
But as a basic and affordable media streamer, you can't go wrong with either the Stream TV or Mi Box S. And both are still a much better choice with the full Android TV OS, than other Smart Phone OS, Android Boxes or Fire TV streamers.
