This Has Some Roku Channel Developers and Users Very Upset

Roku Has Thousands of Channels With Many More Added Every Week

The "Roku Just Added Category" was a popular way to find new channels added to the Roku Channel store every week. This was also something that some unscrupulous Roku Channel developers figured out how to abuse.

A real problem on Roku is channel spam. This is where some developers will create many channels using the same exact public domain content and upload it to Roku over and over again using different titles.

So some channel developers could have uploaded hundreds if not thousands of channels with the same content trying to game the system.

This is unfair to honest developers that truly add unique and original content to their channels and want to try and obtain a following or subscriber base.

By constantly having to compete with the large amount of spam channels their channels tend to get lost in the sea of cheap low budget garbage channels.

Roku Lowers The Hammer on Spam Channels

Many users in the Roku Rocks Unofficial Support Group on Facebook have been complaining about channel spam for quite some time. And we have been hearing rumors that the hammier was going to drop on these channel developers for some time.

Unfortunately, by eliminating the Roku Just Added Category it upset some legitimate Roku owners who used this category to find new content. And it created quite a firestorm on Roku's Forum.

We realize some users are genuinely upset, but more likely the ones screaming the loudest may have been the ones taking advantage to this category with channel spam.

Other Alternative To Identify New Channels and Combat Roku Channel Spam

Roku is working really hard on improving the quality of their platform. They have another New and Notable Category which shows new content that is popular and trending on Roku. Now new channels must have some great user reviews to show up in this category.

It would still be nice to see any new channels that are added to help users find new content. But to do this Roku first needs to figure out a way to kill all the spam channels.

We hate to see censoring of content, but Roku at some point may need to limit developers and penalize those who keep adding new channels with different titles using the same duplicate content.
