Why the Nvidia SHIELD is Still Worth Buying

Here's Why the 4 Year Old Nvidia SHIELD Is Still Worth Buying Today

Time marches on and the Nvidia SHIELD keeps getting older, but here's why it's still worth investing in one today

Nvidia Shield with a Tegra X1 is still a good buy!

Here's Why The SHIELD Continues to Out-Perform Any Other Android Box Today

If you want to buy a new Media Player and since the original Nvidia SHIELD and SHIELD Pro were both released in May 2015, there may be some hesitation on purchasing one today.

Well we are here to tell you, it has been and still is one of the best performing Android TV boxes available today. And there is nothing in the Android world that can yet match it in both power and performance.

Because when Nvidia released their Android SHIELD TV in 2015, they wanted something to showcase their Tegra X1 Chipset. This gaming CPU at the time performance wise was much further ahead than any Android media streamer, Apple TV or Roku. And the SHIELD Tegra X1 system-on-chip design was based on the ARM Cortex-A57 CPU. It also used Nvidia's Maxwell microarchitecture GPU. It came with 3 GB of RAM along with 16GB of Flash storage. And the Pro model came with a 500 GB internal hard drive installed instead of 16GB Flash.

In 2017 Nvidia released a newer model which actually was designed to lower the price to make it more competitive with an Apple TV. They removed the IR sensor and the Micro SD port. But they slightly redesigned the gaming controller and the remote control.

Newer SHIELD Remote Not As Nice as the Original

Another change in 2017 model was to drop the rechargeable battery from the original design with two replaceable watch type batteries. The Pro now discontinued kept the original design and remote.

Here are some Great Troubleshooting Tips if Your SHIELD Remote Suddenly Stops Working »

The SHIELD Remote is a love it or hate it design. Some are fine with it the way it is and others will simply pair a 2nd Generation Voice Activated Fire TV Stick remote or a WeChip G20 remote which are both suitable replacements that work very well.

5 Reasons The SHIELD TV is Still a Good Buy

1. Even today 4 years later, there is still no other media streamer Android or otherwise except for a 4K Apple TV that can match the SHIELD's performance.
2. It's a very nice piece of hardware that runs rock solid and works better than any other Android media player out there.
3. Build quality is top notch. It looks and works great the minute it's taken out of the box.
4. Constant Android updates from Nvidia. This has to be the most updated Android box ever. What good is it to buy a super fast Android box when a year later the manufacturer stops supporting it with new software version updates? Nvidia, on the other hand, has supported both versions of their Nvidia Shield with the latest Android OS updates year after year.
5. It Rocks IPTV, Kodi and Android TV Apps. While not every Android app may be compatible with their Lean Back Android TV launcher. This box will support and sideload most Android apps easily.

Other than the remote control which we touched on already and which is easily solved. There is no reason not to give the Nvidia Shield serious consideration if in the market for an Android TV Box. Except unless maybe you think Nvidia plans on releasing a newer version sometime soon. Which for now may just be wishful thinking.
