TCL Roku Remote Tips

If you own a TCL Roku TV, at some point you may have one of two remotes. Either the Standard IR remote which is line of sight and must be pointed at the television to work. Or their Enhanced Remote which is wireless and can be pointed anywhere.

Each TCL Remote Type has Pluses and Minuses.

TCL Roku Standard IR Remote

Advantages
- Easy to use and generally works quite well.
- Can be replaced by most any Universal IR Remote
- Cost Less to Replace

Disadvantages
- Must be pointed directly at the TV
- No Headphone Jack for Roku Private Listening

TCL Roku Enhanced WiFi Remote

Advantages
- Point anywhere to control a TCL TV.
- Includes Headphone Jack for Private Listening

Disadvantages
- Harder to find affordable Universal replacement remotes.
- Batteries drain faster especially using Roku Private Listening.
- Requires pairing which can sometimes be flakey.

What to Do If TCL Roku Remote Stops Responding

Step 1. If the remote is non responsive remove all the batteries for several seconds. If it then begins working, it may have locked up and just needed to be reset.
Step 2. If the remote is still not working, install a brand new set of Alkaline batteries. Often this is all that's needed to get the remote control working again.
Step 3. Pairing - This only applies to the TCL Enhanced Remote. Should it no longer control the TCL Roku TV and has fresh batteries installed, it may need to be re-paired. Follow this process below to pair the remote.

1. Remove the back battery cover from the Enhanced TCL Remote.
2. The button on the left is the pairing button. Hold it down for a couple seconds until the pairing LED on the right begins to flash.
3. Power down your TCL TV. Once it restarts the remote will then attempt pair to the TV. This can take 30 seconds or longer. Once the TCL Enhanced remote has successfully paired, a dialog screen will confirm this on the TV screen, and the remote battery indicator will also then be visible on the home screen.

TCL Roku Remote Replacements

If the remote can't be fixed using the methods above it may be time to buy a replacement remote. IR remotes are inexpensive and can be purchased on Amazon. Amazon does not sell Enhanced Remotes WiFi remotes that have the headphone jack. Part Number BRC64 and these will need to be purchased from Walmart or other online retailers. Unfortunately, the TCL Enhanced Remote is very expensive and it costs over $100+ if you can even find it in stock.

Before spending a hundred+ dollars on another TCL remote control, here are some better options.

Use Your Phone As a Remote

A phone app can work great to control your Roku television. But if your original remote is broken or lost, purchasing a lower cost IR remote is still needed. Because a Phone App can't setup a TCL Roku TV, or any other Roku player after performing a factory hard reset.

For everything else, the remote app is pretty handy and can certainly save you from needing to buy another expensive remote.

A third party universal remote makes sense for several reasons. And here is why. They are generally higher quality than the remote that typically comes with a Roku media streamer or television.
