Are Higher Netflix Prices Likely?

Are Higher Netflix Fees Likely?

If you've been enjoying watching popular, original shows on Netflix, you may soon need to dig a little deeper into your wallet.

Some Wall Street insiders think the possibility of more ongoing price hikes from Netflix for those subscribers in the U.S.A could be likely.

Variety reported "In a research note Monday, Piper Jaffray analysts said Netflix is positioned to raise fees for its streaming service on a regular basis. That hypothesis is based on a survey conducted by the firm of about 1,100 U.S. Netflix users that found 71% said they felt content on the service has improved."

At the same time, the company is thinking about offering lower-priced plans for overseas markets to entice more customers into subscribing for the first time in virtually untapped markets like India.

Ongoing Netflix Price Hikes Could Send Cord-Cutters Running for The Hills

Here's why this may not be such a great idea. Cord-cutters are a frugal bunch. Many of us cut the cord because we were tired of ongoing price hikes that we endured when cable TV or satellite providers were pretty much the only game in town.

If Netflix a favorite streaming service of cord-cutters were to adopt this same approach, it could very much cause a backlash that would send many of us fleeing to other streaming TV providers that offered a better value for TV entertainment. Alternative streaming TV services like Hulu or Amazon Prime Video would gladly take our money.

Especially, if other competing streaming TV providers were to keep their pricing pretty much flat during a time Netflix once again began raising their price. Sure, a large percentage of subscribers would very likely continue to pay more to keep using Netflix. Others would simply choose more affordable options that were available.

Driving up the monthly price would also make splitting the cost among subscribers through account sharing seem like a much more attractive option as well.

Other cord-cutters would choose lesser well known, streaming services like Philo TV and yet others would turn to subscription-based IPTV services that are questionable in nature.

Disney Streaming TV Service Right Around The Corner

Next year Disney plans on launching their own streaming service which could very much compete with Netflix. Disney's content will be leaving Netflix and migrating onto their new streaming platform as well.

Netflix plans on spending billions of dollars on creating new content which they plan on borrowing to offset this big loss of content from their platform.

More Netflix Subscriber Churn

When the cost of a streaming service is inexpensive, most subscribers will simply pay month after month and never think about changing. Once the price reaches a certain tipping point, it will make them want to dump the streaming service after a period of time to try another, and another taking advantage of any free trials offered.

If Netflix subscriber churn increases, this could very much reflect on their profits. Money that went to them month after month can just as easily go into the pockets of a competing streaming TV service 6 months out of the year. If this starts happening in a large enough volume, it could easily wipe out any profits generated by another price increase.

Not only that, they would risk losing loyal customers who may find another streaming service equally as good and some would not return at all.

Hero To Zero in No Time Flat

Netflix was a hero when they gave cord-cutters a viable option to cut the cord and freed them from expensive monthly cable TV bills. Raise prices one too many times and they risk becoming what drove their customers away from cable TV in the first place. A big corporation who values money and the price of their stock over customer's satisfaction, a sure recipe for failure in todays fickle marketplace.
