Roku to Resume Selling in Mexico

Roku to Resume Selling Their Media Streamers in Mexico

Roku has been once again given the green light to resume media streamer sales in Mexico after the company was sued by Mexico's giant cable TV provider Cablevision because their boxes facilitated piracy over a year ago.

This forever changed Roku and they went from one of the most open streaming platforms to one that is now tightly controlled and any form of piracy is quickly dealt with and stamped out. Several popular channels that once offered pirated content or could be used to facilitate piracy have been dealt with and removed from the platform.

With Roku Media Streamer Sales to Resume in Mexico, it sent Roku stock soaring today and it was given a nice almost 4% bounce from the news.

After the recent ruling, Roku issued this announcement

"We are grateful for our customers in Mexico who, despite the sales ban, continued to stream more and more hours; and for our retail partners and content providers who supported us throughout this past year," Roku General Counsel Stephen Kay said in the news release. "We look forward to launching the latest Roku devices in Mexico soon and giving customers an even richer streaming experience."

This is great news for Roku and also Roku channel developers because they will now have a much wider audience for their channel content. Not such great news for Amazon and their Fire TV because they continue to be one of the most pirated media streaming platform sold today.

It will be interesting if at some point Amazon's Fire TV Streamers are also called out by Cablevision for promoting piracy, or if they are simply too large to mess with?

Being able to once again sell their media streamers in Mexico offers Roku some much-needed market share to fend off Amazon's Fire TV media streamers which have been gaining ground this last year.

Even though Roku media streamers were once super popular in Mexico, what remains to be seen is how popular they will be now that most all the illegal streaming channels are no longer available on the platform.

One place where Roku has almost every other media streamer beat is in the sheer number of Adult TV Channels. Maybe this alone is enough to keep Roku's media streamers flying off the shelves South of the border...

Whatever happens, it's nice the Mexico ban has finally been lifted and it's now behind Roku who continues to make one of the most user-friendly and easiest to use media streamers in the world.
