Most new cord-cutters may already own a media streamer that is fully capable of playing movies and shows from Netflix and other apps.
TV manufacturers tried to jump on the cord-cutting trend early on by offering software on their Smart TVs that could also easily be used to watch the same content as on a media streamer.
As good as it sounds, unless you own a Roku or Android OS based Smart TV, chances are you won't find it anywhere as nice as a stand-alone media player.

Many Smart TV manufacturers choose to use their own software because they would rather not pay someone else a license fee to use their OS, or they simply want more control over their Television's Operating System.

If you own any of the Smart TVs listed above, it can more than likely fully act as a media streamer on its own with a limited number of apps.
Unless you have a Roku, Fire TV or Android-based Smart TVs, don't expect to be able to access the same number of apps or channels as what available on a stand-alone Roku, Apple TV or Android media streamer.
If you plan on only watching most of your content from Netflix or Amazon, then a Smart TV may be a great alternative to a seperate media streamer.
Using a Smart TV can even sometimes provide a much better picture when watching content from the same apps than lower cost stand-alone media streamers.
So if you have not tried to use your Smart TV as a media streamer, why not give it a shot.
