What You Need To Know About About OREO 8.0 On the Nvidia SHIELD
OREO 8.0 update is rolling out now to the Nvidia SHIELD
Learn More About The Android Nvidia SHIELD TV |
Updates are rolling out to Android Nvidia SHIELD boxes now. This update has mixed reviews. Some love it, some hate it and wish they never updated. It should be rolling out to your SHIELD TV soon.
This new OREO 8.0 update makes some things nicer and makes some things worse and depending on if you use what it breaks you want to skip this altogether by turning off automatic updates.
Some things that you notice right off the bat is the way the home screen is organized. Now the icons are smaller and arranged with a row of shortcuts down the side that let you access frequently accessed apps like Netflix, YouTube, Plex, Games and Google Play. These are fully customizable and can be reorganized, some can be turned off altogether.
Like anything else that's new, the new OREO 8.0 update on the Nvidia SHIELD may take some getting used to. It would be nice if users could have had the option to keep the original home screen that they may be used to vs forcing this new home screen on SHIELD TV users.
For those that may have had your SHIELD TV for a while, you may have remembered the last time Nvidia updated the home screen in a prior Android version update. At the time it felt strange as well. Our advice is to give this some time and you will probably get used to it soon. Maybe you may even like it quite well.
Updates can't be forced. Your SHIELD is either in the queue to receive the update. If it's not, you just need to be patient and wait for your turn.
If you hate this update and decide not to let your SHIELD update, then all future updates are over for you. Our recommendation is let your Nvidia SHIELD update, then learn to love it. In a few weeks, you will most likely get used to the new home screen. Over time as it becomes more familiar and second nature the old home screen will soon be forgotten.
Screenshot Screen Record Function Removed in OREO 8.0
One feature that has some users upset is that in OREO the screenshot function has been removed and replaced by a button function that now gives users access to all their apps. There is a work around but we have to warn you, it's really clunky.
Bottom line, the first generation Nvidia SHIELD model has been around since 2015 and they have now given their users several Android updates on these and their newer boxes. This is simply unheard of with cheap budget Android boxes. To get the latest version of Android, you would need to buy a new box every time a version of Android comes out.
Nvidia deserves some serious kudos for this and this is one reason the Nvidia SHIELD TV continues to be one of the best Android TV boxes available to date. They listen to their customers and continue to make the SHIELD better and better.
Plus, no other Android box can touch the SHIELD TV performance wise yet three years later.
