How To Block Obscene Content On Every Device On Your Network
Currently a bill in Virginia is being considered that wants to make Device Providers charge $20 to unblock any Internet device sold in their State so it can access obscene content.
The money would go to support the fight against "Human Trafficking", which is just another sneaky way to grab more money from people and regulate an individual's freedom on the Internet.
"RICHMOND, Va. (WHSV) — A bill has been proposed in Virginia's General Assembly that would require any device capable of accessing the internet sold in Virginia have the ability to block obscene content and have this turned on by default. End users would need to pay $20 to turn it off and this money would be used to fund a newly created Virginia Prevention of Human Trafficking Victim Fund. The money would go toward supporting human trafficking victim services and the prosecution of human trafficking cases."
This is not a joke, you can read more about it here.
While funding the fight against "Human Trafficking" is a noble cause, undoubtedly, this will quickly be challenged in the courts as being unconstitutional under the First Amendment.
Just the logistics of this for hardware makers is a nightmare. Many manufactures rather than making one model of their mobile phone, tablet, PC, gaming device or a long list of other hardware that can access the Internet that has the block installed for Virginia. Then one model for the rest of the country. Many will simply chose not to sell their products to those living in Virginia.
This is already happening with many gun manufacturers that will no longer ship firearms to California and a few other states because of tough gun restrictions put in place by over zealous State legislatures.
Instead of having a group of individuals decide what is and what is not obscene, a better way for those wishing to filter this type of content from their family would be to install a simple set of DNS Server IP addresses on their Router. Or maybe rather than crippling the hardware have Internet providers in the State install DNS servers by default that block this type of content and let customers opt out though them.
Your Home Router is a Powerful Weapon Against Offensive Content on The Internet |
Changing DNS servers on your Router is a safe and proven way to block access to adult content and keep your family safe from undesirable content from every device that has access to the Internet on your home network. You can do this right now by changing two IP DNS Server addresses in your Internet settings on your own Router.
Block Adult Content Install Family Shield From Open DNS
Open DNS is a web filtering service that will block all kinds of offensive content. Besides blocking content to porn sites, Open DNS will also block known phishing and scam sites that want to install hidden software or trick you into clicking on links and entering your personal info to let them gain access to popular sites like Netflix or Hulu.
All it takes is to add these two IP addresses in your Name Servers for your DNS in your Router Preferred DNS Server: 208.67.222.123 Alternate DNS Server: 208.67.220.123
How To Change Router DNS Settings
Accessing your DNS settings will require that you access your Router's Settings. This is usually done by going to a web browser and adding a URL which may depend on your particular model.
Most Routers use this IP address by default 192.168.0.1
There may be times you will still want full unrestricted access to the Internet. All you need to do is enter your old DNS Server addresses back into your Router and you're back to normal.
Be sure to copy and paste your old DNS servers to a file, or write down and keep these addresses in a safe place.
Remember, by changing your DNS Servers it will block all devices on your home Network and this will include an XBox, Playstation, iPad, iPhone, Android smartphone, Smart TV, Media streamers and more. Your Phones or other devices that have Internet access will not be affected as they do not use your home Network to connect to the Internet.
