Should You Place Tape Over Your Web Cams?

Cameras and Microphones are Everywhere! Why You May Want To Tape Over Your Web Camera To Protect Your Privacy

Twenty years ago if someone told you that you would actually one day be paying good money to have your house bugged you would have looked at them like they were nuts.

This is precisely what we have been doing. All for the latest must have high tech gadgets. Today, cameras and microphones are built into much of the Internet connected technology we use daily.

The scary part is we would never really know if the web cams in these devices were being activated by:

A. Rogue Hackers. It has been proven hackers can access a camera on an Internet connected device and activate the camera while at the same time deactivating the light that is supposed to come on when the web cam is activated.

B. Someone that works for the company that made your laptop, smart phone, tablet or media streamer could also easily figure out how to activate the camera or microphone.

C. The government may have secret agreements with some companies to put backdoors in certain devices to activate cameras and microphones for their own surveillance purposes.

Covering our web cameras is something we typically don't spend much time thinking about. Although, maybe we should... If you end up covering your web cam with black electrical tape, after watching this video no one will think you are crazy. That still leaves us to find way to disable the microphones which is no easy task. Except for maybe this white noise generator.
