4K Streaming Has Arrived

4K Streaming Has Arrived

It's been slow to take off, 4K streaming is now a reality!

Here are some of the best ways to find and take advantage of ultra clear high definition 4K streaming today.

4K is now available from Comcast and DirecTV on a limited basis. As more consumers keep buying new 4K televisions, the volume of UHD TV shows and available streaming sources will only continue to increase.

Cable cutters will also see more access to ultra HD 4k streaming options. Make sure you have a fast cable connection, you will need it. Minimum speeds of at least 25 megabits per seconds is highly recommended for optimal streaming 4K videos.

4K offers viewers resolution that is 4X higher than standard HD

Standard HD contains 1920 x 1080 pixels compared to 4K UHD which has a minimum of 3840 x 2160 pixels. This is an increase of more than 8 million pixels.

Here are some of the best options for streaming 4K video today:

NETFLIX - Netflix is currently offering a handful of shows and movies in 4K. Current $8 a month subscribers are getting 4K free for the next two years. Then along with all new subscribers, they will need to pay $12.99 a month. This is because 4K video files take considerably more bandwidth than standard HD files to stream.

Having watched some of their shows in 4K, the quality is best described as breathtakingly clear. The level of detail is amazing. Watching a show in 4K vs SD is definite eye candy for your eyes.

Here are some of the shows and movies you can currently stream in 4K UHD on Netflix:

Amazon Instant - Amazon has also started offering some shows on their Instant Streaming in 4K.

They also added a very nice 4K Ultra HD Guide with tons of great info, and a listing of 4K movies and shows that are in their library.

To watch 4K content on Amazon, you will need to be a Prime subscriber which costs $99 a year. Besides streaming movies and TV shows, Prime also offers many great additional benefits which you can see here.

Amazon also has about 20 pages of movies you can buy in 4K Blue-ray DVD. Click here to view their entire selection which includes movies like: The Amazing Spider-Man, Battle Los Angeles, Interstellar and many more.

This is also a very good alternative if your broadband connection is not fast enough to watch 4K movies on your 4K TV.

This will require a good Blue-ray 4K DVD player like the Samsung BD-J7500 3D 4K Wi-Fi Upscaling Blu-ray Player.

4K DVDs will give you the ultimate 4K experience as the video is not compressed like many 4K video files when using a media streamer.

To take full advantage of 4K streaming besides a compatible TV, you will also need a streamer like their Fire Stick or Fire TV.

There are also a wide range of Android TV models which can stream 4K. You can view a list of Top 10 Android TV Streamers here.

Unfortunately, Roku and Apple TV Fans will still need to wait a while longer to buy a 4K compatible streamer. Although internet rumors if they are to be believed, say we may be seeing something by this fall from both companies.

Vudu UHD

In a recent announcement Vudu said they will also be offering ultra high definition content in 4K.

Three Movies listed that will be available on Vudu in 4K are:

No word yet on the pricing to rent these movies. Since they charge the same currently for their HD and HDX quality movies which is a little more than SD, they will most likely cost the same or a maybe little more.

You can sign up for Vudu and be notified when new 4K movies are available here.

YouTube

Another great source of UHD 4K Streaming content is YouTube. They actually have had 4K videos for a while now.

You can watch on your computer or compatible streamer using the Chrome browser.

For Chrome users, we found this interesting tweak you can do to for smoother 4K playback.

The chromium team is currently working on smoother video frame rendering for HTML5 videos in Dev Channel. You can try it now by enabling the experimental flag named "New video rendering path for video elements" at chrome://flags/#enable-new-video-renderer and restart Chrome.

In practice, that means that if your computer was on the edge of playing 4K60, 4K, 1080p60 videos on YouTube for instance (hiccup every few seconds), it should now play smoothly.

The Future of 4K Streaming

There is no denying 4K is the future of television resolution. It may still take some time for this to happen. As our broadband connections keep getting faster, 4K streaming will soon dominate how we watch TV.

Once you see the clarity and amazing picture quality of 4K video, you will never look at SD the same way.

With current monitors already boasting 5K resolution, it will only continue to get better and better as we keep moving forward.
