VegaOS on Fire TV May End Pirating On The Platform Forever

Sideloading on Fire TV May be Ending Soon

The Days of Sideloading and Watching Free Movies and TV Shows On Fire TV May Be Coming To An End

FireTV was often a streamer of choice for many cord-cutters for several reasons. They were dirt cheap, worked reasonably well, and most importantly since they ran on an Android operating system they were easily used for sideloading popular TV apps for streaming and watching free copyrighted content often found online.

This may all be ending soon as Amazon announced plans to develop and implement a new Vega OS that takes them away from Android. You can only imagine what a thorn in their side the Android OS must have been to Amazon Execs, who watched their competitors like Roku and Apple lock down their systems to 3rd party apps. And all that potential revenue that was lost to those pesky sideloading pirates.

New Fire TV Operating System Rolling Out on Select Devices, Confirming Shift Away from Android

The Streamable published a great article outlining some of the benefits for the company like more advertising revenue which they won't need to share with Google, faster updates than were pushed out on Android, and more control over the software.

You can learn a lot more about this transition to the new VegasOS on Fire TV from this article.

While all this sounds wonderful for Amazon, it will still take some time to implement. Streaming providers will all need to climb on board and release new apps specially made for VegaOS. So it could still take a while to get this up and running. But it's coming, and while Fire TVs and Fire Sticks have been super popular for running Kodi and other Android TV apps, many users may find themselves disappointed unless they can block future software updates.

Which Platform Will Take Its Place Once Amazon Fire TVs and Fire Sticks Are Locked Down

Android boxes like the Nvidia SHIELD, Google Chromecast with Google TV, and also the ONN brand of Android media streamers are all popular alternatives for sideloading apps using Android. Any of these devices can easily take the place of a Fire TV for those who don't want to live inside a walled garden and lose access to their favorite Android streaming apps.

It remains to be seen how this OS change will affect overall Fire TV sales. Time will tell and we'll have to wait and see what happens.
