HBO Max and Discovery+ Join Forces for Epic Streaming Service, Including Live Sports, and News
From News to Sports: Warner Bros. Discovery's Max Aims to Revolutionize Streaming
David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, recently revealed plans for the company's newly rebranded streaming service, Max. The combination of its two existing streaming services, HBO Max and Discovery+ merged into a single streaming TV service. They also have plans to add Live News and sports programming to this bundle in the future.
Warner Bros. Discovery Takes on Streaming Rivals with Ambitious Live Content Plan
At a press event, Zaslav boasted that his company is a "global leader in sports" and "global leader in news." He even went so far as to promise that they will be revealing their "attack plan" to use this live content to grow their streaming business.
But, we really don't yet know for sure if this live content will make its grand debut on Max, nor do we know exactly what kind of content will be available. Currently, the only live sports you can catch on HBO Max are men's and women's soccer, and Discovery+ occasionally streams some sporting events.
Beyond HBO and Discovery: Max Looks to Compete in the Sports Streaming Arena
We do know that TNT and TBS are under the Warner Bros. Discovery umbrella and they both air content from the NHL, NBA, and MLB. So, there's a good chance we may see more live sports content on Max in the future which may help entice more cord-cutters to sign up.
It seems like every streaming service is trying to get in on the sports action. Apple TV+ is airing Major League Soccer and MLB games, and YouTube TV+ just scored the rights to the NFL's Sunday Ticket. So, it wouldn't be surprising if Max followed suit.
Keep in mind, though, that Max isn't available yet. It won't be available until May 23rd, and you'll have to choose from different subscription tiers that range from $10 to $20. It'll cost you more than HBO Max does now to get in on the Max action.
So, get ready for Max, the streaming service combo promises to add live news and sports content in the future. This could make them a powerful competitor, in the crowded TV streaming market.
If you sign up to HBO Max right now at the current $9.99 price with ads or $15.99 without ads you can enjoy the new merged Max for no extra cost for at least 6 months before the new higher prices of $20/month for ad-free 4K or $16/month with limited ads kick in.
