Can you Block Ads on Roku?

Roku makes its money by selling ads on its streaming TV platform. That's why there is no built-in feature to block ads on Roku devices. However, some users have reported success in blocking ads by installing third-party ad-blocking apps on their routers or using a VPN service.

It is important to note that some streaming services may not work correctly or may be in violation of the service's terms of use when using ad-blocking methods. Additionally, these methods may not be completely effective and some ads or blank spaces may still be visible in place of the ads.

PieHole Ad Blocking Software

Piehole is third-party ad-blocking software installed on a router or on a Raspberry Pi to block ads on all devices connected to a router on your home network, including Roku devices. It works by intercepting and blocking the DNS requests that devices make to the router, which prevents the ads from being downloaded.

This can save considerable bandwidth which may be even more important for anyone with broadband caps.

Another thing to consider when installing a Router level blocking app is that some sites like YouTube, Pandora, and others will stream their content from the same servers hosting ads. Using an ad-blocker would leave these sites unusable as nothing would be displayed.

It's important to note, Piehole is not an official app and its use may be in violation of the terms of service of some streaming services. Additionally, since Piehole is a third-party app, there may be security risks associated with its use. It is important to use caution when installing and using any third-party app, including Piehole.

Instead of Blocking Ads Pay for Ad-Free Streaming Services Instead

Blocking ads on a Router with Piehole is a complicated process, it's easier to subscribe to an ad-free streaming service instead of watching ads. Some popular ad-free streaming channels include Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and Hulu (with the "No Ads" option). These platforms offer a wide range of original content, movies, and TV shows, and do not have traditional commercial breaks. Other ad-free streaming options include Apple TV+, Peacock, and HBO Max.
Some of these streaming TV services are not free and require a paid subscription to access their content.

We do have some control over the types of ads we want to see on Roku. The video below shows how to stop personalized ads. This will make the ads more random, and you won't see ads based on your viewing habits.
