Searches for Apple TV Increased 900 Percent This Year
Something triggered a massive increase in Apple TV searches
We can only speculate why there was a 900% increase in searches for Apple TV in 2022. But something big must have triggered this abrupt change.
Apple TV Always Lagged Behind Roku and Fire TV in Popularity, Until This Year
After Apple TV clamped down on jailbreaks they have lagged behind Roku and Fire TV in popularity. Until 2022, something happened this year to increase the overall searches on Google by 900%, for the Apple TV.
We strongly suspect several things happened this year that may have helped bring about this massive shift.
1. Nvidia is waning in popularity after a buggy Android update that broke several things. And Google adding ads to the SHIELD Home Screen. Ads were never there until this year and this also upset many SHIELD fans.
It also has not helped that Nvidia has not done a major update to the SHIELD hardware in several years now. The last update was a negligible performance update and removed some features that the prior models had. So it looked more like a cost-saving measure.
If you follow any cord-cutting or media streaming forums, many prior Nvidia SHIELD owners are dumping these streamers for an Apple TV 4K which now has even more powerful hardware.
It's also easier to use, smoother, and best of all there are no ads on the Apple TV Home Screen.
2. Roku also has had some issues this last year which caused many of their biggest fans to lose interest. This was reflected in last quarter's earnings report, which caused a big decline in their stock.
In February, they eliminated private channels. This was a big disappointment for many cord-cutters who used their Roku streamers to watch Private Adult Channels. Apple TV also does not have adult channels, but what they do have is AirPlay, which works better and is less glitchy on their media streamer than any other.
Apple's App Store while locked down like Roku is less so. They offer a handful of IPTV channels in their App Store, while Roku has none. And you can even sideload Kodi on an Apple TV but you will need a Developer account to do so.
Since Roku makes the bulk of its earnings from ads, you will find many more ads integrated on the Home Screen on their streamers than on the Nvidia SHIELD and none on the Apple TV.
We have also noticed in the streaming TV forums, that many former Roku owners are also moving over to an Apple TV because they want to see fewer ads, and want faster smoother hardware.
Apple hardware also has a lot higher build quality, and their devices typically last much longer before they need to be upgraded.
3. Apple's AppleTV+ streaming TV service is also increasing in popularity. This could also be why searches increased as they only have original content in their library. And these shows lately have been winning award after award and are quite good. Best of all their streaming service is only $5/month.
Another reason for Apple's surge in popularity this year is with the recession, and inflation, many more people trying to get their money to stretch further are dumping Netflix. Since it is one of the more expensive streaming services, they may be opting out in favor of AppleTV+. Maybe they are not adding the + to their search which is then lumps the hardware and software searches together.
The Apple TV Price Is Still a Deterrent For Many Streamers
An Apple TV is not cheap at $150-$200, but they recently have been on sale at a discounted price. But if Apple sold them for less than a hundred dollars, you would see even more streamers make the switch. A new lower-cost Apple TV model is rumored to be in the works. But if you can find a current Apple TV 4K model on sale, like currently on Amazon, you'll end up with a very nice media streamer without all the ads.
Fire TV Searches Only a Fraction of Roku and Apple TV
Amazon's Fire TV streamer only has a small fraction of people searching for it on Google compared to Roku and Apple TV. While their media streamers run on a customized Android TV version, Amazon also implemented many ads into its Home Screen.
Android boxes that are more powerful, can be had for the same price or even less than a Fire TV. And they also have a less cluttered user interface with fewer ads and other bloatware than what you'll find on a Fire TV.
Don't let the Apple haters deter you from giving an Apple TV a try. It's one of today's best media streamers.
