The Next Big Thing in TV Streaming

Here's The Next Big Thing in TV Streaming

Streaming Tech Lately Has Been Less Exciting Than It Used to Be

Future of Streaming

With COVID taking up much of our collective consciousness these past few years, advancements in Streaming TV technology have been minimal at best.

But even though it's not been at the forefront, things have been happening behind the scenes that look promising as streaming TV technology is quickly moving forward towards 2025 and beyond. Here is something we can look forward to, that will make streaming television all the better in the near future.

Improved Video Codecs On The Way

Improved Video Codec H.266 VVC

The streaming TV industry is migrating to an AOMedia Video 1 (AV1) and an H.266 Versatile Video Coding (VVC) codec. It was designed to compress and transmit high-quality video over the Internet. It was founded and designed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia). This is a joint effort between 48 tech companies. These include Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Mozilla, Netflix, and more.

VVC has a data requirement reduction of 50% when compared to our current standard H.265/HEVC. AVI also reduced data usage by 30% less. So both these codecs will be more widely implemented as more 4K and 8K content becomes more widely available for streamers.

Streaming and Gaming to Merge

It only makes sense, media streamers and gaming platforms share a common denominator which is a high-quality television display. Merging the gaming platform to also include a nice media streamer function will be one fewer device consumers need to buy. And less e-waste that ends up in the trash.

Netflix is adding video games, and Apple has Apple Arcade. Now Microsoft is designing a lower-cost media streamer that plays games. So the next gold rush for streaming media companies may be getting top game developers signed onto their streaming media platforms.

Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality VR Pod

VR may also be the next big thing to come to television. Adult Steaming Channels have already embraced 4K and 8K VR Technology.  Some day instead of watching television on the wall. Instead, we may be sitting in our new VR pods, totally immersed in the movie. Your TV Pod will mimic all the tactile sensations and transmit the smells and sounds of what's playing in ultra-realistic 3D virtual reality. You can bet these VR pods won't be cheap. They will cost much more than a Roku or Fire TV, with a cost ranging from $10K to $25K.

Lower Cost High-Speed Broadband

Lower Cost High-Speed Broadband

The Internet has become more ingrained into our everyday life. Especially as our homes and appliances become smarter and more connected. Lower cost high-speed broadband availability everywhere on earth and in space will be more important than ever. Elon's Space X is already making this happen, and Amazon is soon to follow with swarms of smaller satellites circling the earth to make high-speed broadband a reality everywhere.

This increased competition from big cable will help drive the cost of the Internet down as it becomes more widely available.

More Media Company Mergers

As more streaming providers try to create streaming services of their own. Expect to see more of the bigger media company fish swallowing up smaller streaming companies. Some may sell their content, but others will be sold and merged to make a larger more competitive streaming TV service when they find it's not as profitable as they expected.

There really has not been much new development in streaming hardware. But we expect this will change in the next few years. As the world returns back to work, we can expect to see more great streaming hardware and software to follow.
