Increase Android TV Box Storage in 5 Steps

Increase Android TV Box Storage in 5 Steps

An Android TV Box is Great For Streaming But Their Storage Space is Often Lacking

We love using an Android TV box for streaming TV shows and movies. Especially since they are the least restrictive boxes available today. Other media streaming companies like Roku and Apple do everything they can to lock their boxes down to only let you add content they want you to use. Android TV Boxes on the other hand are like the Wild West where pretty much anything goes.

So Many Apps Available for Android TV with So Little Storage Space

One of the biggest drawbacks of many Android TV boxes is they come with limited storage space for adding apps. When memory becomes full, this can cause these boxes to slow down. Not to mention needing to uninstall apps to make room for new apps, music, photos, and other files.

The good news, is there are some things you can do to make the most of the storage you have. This will keep your Android TV box running at its full potential.

How to Increase Your Android TV Box Storage

Make sure your Android TV box is running on the latest version of Android. Or at a minimum, it's using Android OS 6.0 or greater. To increase storage you will need a USB Flash Drive at least 32 GB or larger. You can find good deals on Flash drives which come in various sizes on eBay.

Another option is an external USB drive which comes in much larger sizes. But you need to first make sure your Android box has a full-size USB port like what's available on an Nvidia SHIELD. If your device does not have a regular USB port and only has a micro USB port, then you'll also need to get a USB OTG cable.

Step 1. If needed, Plug your USB drive or stick into the OTG cable and then plug the cable into your device.
Step 2. You will need to decide if you want to format and use your external drive for apps or only for general file storage. Internal storage is generally faster for apps, so you can use it only for apps and offload all your other media files onto the external drive to make room for more apps.
Step 3. Go to Settings, and select Storage and Reset, and search for and select your external USB drive. It will then display the size of the connected drive.
Step 4. Choose between setting up this device for either External or Internal storage based on your choice in Step 2.
Step 5. Your USB drive will be reformated, so be sure you don't have any data on it you want to save. If it is set up for internal storage, you won't be able to remove it and add data from another device like a PC because it will be encrypted and only be accessible by your Android TV box. So if you plan on moving files back and forth set it up for external storage.

Now that you have increased the size of your Android TV Box storage, enjoy the added capacity to add more apps, or files you want to play on your media streamer.
