Smart TVs: These are The Best ATSC 3.0 Ready TVs to Buy in 2023

Many New Smart TVs Sold in 2023 Come with ATSC 3.0 Tuners Already On Board

Best ATSC 3.0 Smart TV 2023

It seems like every TV sold today comes with "Smart TV" technology, but not all smart TVs are a smart buy

It used to be before Smart TV technology was a thing, you would pick out a new TV set based on screen size and picture quality. But now most televisions come with Roku, Android, or proprietary operating systems that power their Smart function. And this seems to be what many are making their buying decisions on.

While we love both the Roku and Android media streamers, having them built in as the primary operating system may not always be the best option when looking for a higher-quality large-screen TV.

Mainly because technology in media streamers changes so quickly, and while a TV can typically last 10 to 15 years, the media streamer that powers the brains of current Smart TVs is typically obsolete in 3 to 5 years.

If your Smart TV is no longer supported and updated, you still have the option of plugging in a media steamer into a spare HDMI port and can use it with the latest technology.

It may make more sense to put the money towards a television that supports a higher quality picture, and the latest ATSC 3.0 Tuner and buy a standalone media streamer from Roku, Apple, or Nvidia that can easily be replaced a few years when their newer models arrive.

Thankfully, even the lower-cost televisions from TCL now make models that can rival some of the best TVs from Samsung, LG, and Sony for picture quality.

A Smart TV with Roku or Android Is Still Perfect for These Areas

Buying a Roku or Android TV as a secondary television is perfect for bedroom or kitchen duty. Televisions in these areas won't get nearly as much use or come with the latest operating systems, ATSC 3.0 tuners, and streaming hardware may not be as necessary.

These TVs are smaller and much more affordable, so replacing a $200 - $300 television does not have as large an impact on the budget as a $3,000 to $4,000 TV does when the brain needs an upgrade.

Swappable Brains, Could This Be the Future for Smart TVs?

At some point, maybe television manufacturers will begin offering Smart TVs with replaceable brain modules. This way replacing the brain with a new faster and better model could be as easy as swapping a thumb drive. Sharp did this early on with their Roku TVs. They actually used a Roku Streaming Stick that fastened to the back of the television with a special bracket and a couple of screws.

This would make sense for higher-end models. Having an upgradeable module would ensure the technology that powers the operating system could remain current for years to come.

Who Offers the Best TV Picture Quality in 2023?

Picture quality is one of the most important features to consider when shopping for a new TV. You mostly stare at the screen when watching TV. A lot more than you do scrolling through menus. So buying a TV based on picture quality is like candy for your eye.

Here are today's top-rated 4K television models:
While

1. LG G1 OLED Evo in Sizes: 55" 65" 77" (Powered by their own OS, this TV provides the best contrast ratio and deepest blacks. OLED is more prone to burn in than LED.)
2. Sony X90J LED in Sizes: 50" 55" 65" 75" (Powered by Google TV, these have less risk for burn-in than OLED.)
3. TCL 5 SERIES/S535 2020 QLED in Sizes: 50" 55" 65" 75" (One of the nicest Roku TVs you will find with a stunning picture. Not ATSC 3.0 Ready)

Now that 8K models with ATSC 3.0 QAM tuners are finally arriving, that's something else to consider. If you you don't want another add-on tuner box, look for a model with the latest ATSC 3.0 over that compatible tuner. They can receive over-the-air broadcasts in 4K.

Once this rolls out to your city, or you can check this map to see if it's already available in your area. This will become just as important as which OS your TV runs on.

These television models all support the latest ATSC 3.0 QAM tuners already built in. Or you can buy an HDHomeRun Connect 4K tuner which works with an Android or Roku app on your home network and allows any TV regardless if it is ATSC 3.0 compatible or not to watch ATSC 3.0 Content in 4K.
