Sevenhugs Smart Remote Calls It Quits

Sevenhugs Smart Remote Calls It Quits

The company that built and sold these remotes notified its customers their remotes will stop working after June 1, 2022.

Smart IR Blaster For iPhone

If you recently bought a Sevenhugs Smart remote, you will soon have a very expensive door stop

Universal remotes are sold far and wide. But the Sevenhugs Smarte remote differed from most. It came with a nice touch screen display, and it was actually a very nice high quality remote. We bought one last year used from eBay, and even wrote about it here.

Sadly, today we received an email from the company letting us know they were calling it quits. And there would be no more sales from online authorized vendors. But the company would support this remote until June 1, 2022. And after that date the remote would no longer work.
Here is their full email:

Almost 8 years ago we started Sevenhugs with the mission to create and bring to market the world’s smartest and easiest to use remote control. It has been our immense honor to have you as customers and support you through the years since we launched Smart Remote in 2018.

Sadly, due to recent market evolution, we made the difficult decision to discontinue Smart Remote. As a result, we will no longer be selling and manufacturing Smart Remote, Smart Remote X and Smart Remote U.

Our Smart Remote products will no longer be available for purchase from authorized resellers.

We will continue to offer support and honor warranties during this transition, and you will be able to continue using your Smart Remote until June 1, 2022, after which date it will no longer function.

We are available to assist you with any questions you may have.

This is rather surprising and very disappointing. Especially since the remote offers an IR function, and even though the company will no longer support it, there is no reason to not support existing devices already programmed into the remote.

It does hook to the Internet for updates so maybe it needs to phone home to remain functional. But whatever the reason,  a device as expensive as this remote was, for it to cease to function completely is a bit puzzling.

We wanted to give everyone a heads up because you can bet once the word gets out, eBay will soon be flooded with these remotes. And many unsuspecting buyers will be very disappointed after shelling out a couple hundred dollars only to find their remote will self destruct after June 1, 2022.

Low Cost Remote App for iPhone and Android

While many expensive Universal remotes exist, there are you can use for your smart phone that will function as an IR remote. Since iPhones, unlike Samsung Galaxy phones don't have IR blaster capabilities. You will need to purchase a small IR blaster that plugs into an iPhone's Lightning port.

Smart IR Blaster For iPhone To Remote Control TV, AC, STB, More - Lightning + App-Enabled

This will let you control thousands of devices right from your phone, which will do an even better job to eliminate remote control clutter. So even though technology changes almost daily sometimes, and when one door suddenly closes, often another soon opens.

So have a look at this option and if you own an iPhone, it will only set you back $60 which includes the app. It's a much less expensive option than the Sevenhugs Smart remote which will soon become an expensive doorstop unless someone figures out how to hack it and extend its life longer.

Here is a Lightning IR Blaster sold on eBay which is only $16!
