Are Smart TVs Better Than Many Media Streamers?

Here's Why a Smart TV Streams Better Than Inexpensive Media Streamers

Many times a smart TV can outperform a cheap media streamer on the same content.

Roku and Android Smart TVs can Outperform Cheap Media Streamers

A Smart TV is an easy way to stream Prime Video, Netflix or other popular streaming channels. Many times, it can even do a better job of streaming TV channels than an inexpensive Fire TV Stick or media streamer.

Some Sony Android Smart TVs have the hardware built in that can even match more expensive media streamers like a Nvidia SHIELD. Unless your Smart TV runs on the Roku or an Android operating system, the limiting factor is not only performance, but sometimes it is the proprietary software which limits which apps and channels you can run and stream from.

So it's often better to go with a better quality media streamer like a Roku, Apple TV or Nvidia SHIELD. Because they have access to a wider range of apps while still offering higher quality hardware that can go toe to toe with the best Smart TVs on the market.

Smart TVs That Offer The Best Streaming TV Performance

The operating system is one factor, but the hardware built into the TV is another factor for choosing a Smart TV. Typically, the more expensive Sony TVs will offer the best performance on many streaming apps.

With all things being equal, the data path from the App to the television is faster by using an internal device built inside a smart TV over an external device attached to the TV's HDMI ports.

First of all the data path is much shorter, and it does not need to travel through a HDMI circuitry or an external HDMI wire. HDMI connectors and wires can have issues of their own like dust in the connector, or a wire that may be faulty.

The biggest difference is the build quality of the television itself. Higher end Smart TVs use better components and typically last longer than the cheaper models. Faster and more powerful processors make a big difference in streaming TV performance in other media streamers and televisions.

Here are several television brands to consider if you want one made to stream from popular streaming TV sites. These can all outperform the cheaper media players and streaming sticks.

Samsung Smart TVs

These televisions use Samsungs Tizen OS which works pretty smooth for streaming. And if you own one, try it for popular apps like Netflix, Hulu or Prime Video. You may not find it as useful as Sony or Roku Smart TVs that offer nearly unlimited apps. But the Samsung App Store still has hundreds of popular apps.

Sony Smart TV

While older Sony TVs use the Android TV OS, their newer models have gone over to Google TV OS. But both share the same underlying Android operating system under the hood. Google TV uses a different-looking user interface or launcher. This means that all your favorite Android streaming apks will still work the same on both.

Besides official Android apps, there are also many apks which can be sideloaded from unsupported sources. But nearly every app available from major streaming TV services is available for Android. These are all available on the Google Play App store.

Roku TCL Smart TV

If you have a Roku TV, then you already own a fully capable media player. Having the media streamer built in makes it a streamlined platform without added clutter. The best thing about Roku besides an easy-to-use interface. They also offer an extensive selection of channels. Not only public channels but also thousands of private Roku channels on their platform as well.

If you already own a Smart TV, before you rush out and buy a media streamer for it, give the onboard operating system a shot and you may find it performs much better than many inexpensive media streamers on the market.
