We recently bought a corner electric fireplace to use as a TV stand. And it is absolutely amazing!

Our first experience with an electric fireplace was on a trip to the coast. A little cabin we rented had one that was used as a TV stand. On a chilly evening, we turned on the electric fireplace. The flickering flame, a great movie and comfortable couch made for a great romantic weekend getaway.

We were surprised at the level of technology, quality and how real today's electric fireplaces look. And also the amount of heat produced to quickly heat a chilly room. We couldn't wait to duplicate this experience in our own home. So during a recent remodel, an electric fireplace was ordered to finish off the project.

Not quite sure what to expect because finding a corner electric fireplace locally was next to impossible. This meant shopping online. Buying sight unseen is always a little risky so we pulled the trigger on Amazon and hoped for the best. Amazon's awesome money back guarantee was one reason we chose to use them in case we needed to return it for any reason.

Why Buy a Dual Purpose Corner Electric Fireplace?

A corner electric fireplace offers more placement options. It can be placed flat against a wall or in a corner. The only difference between a regular model and a corner model is a flip-up board which fills the space in the corner. And this is hinged and held in place when it's up by two slide out support boards. This corner piece matches the top and makes the fireplace look great when placed in a corner. And this board folds down out of the way when placed flat against a wall.

While sizes vary, the larger fireplace mantle can hold up to 45 pounds and accommodate up to a 50" wide flat panel TV. On our Southern Enterprises Mission Oak model the flip-up board was rated to hold 20 pounds.

Some Assembly Required

Our electric fireplace arrived in two boxes, one smaller box held the firebox which was completely assembled. The other long box contained many wood pieces for the mantle. It was packed very well in a massive amount of styrofoam. When everything was unpacked and all the pieces were laying all over the room it did look a little intimidating.

But rest assured assembly is easy. And all that is required to put it together is a Phillips screwdriver. And it comes with all the hardware needed. They showed a hammer was required for assembly. But we really did not use it because everything fit together really well.

The instructions are very well written and are basically a bunch of drawings that outline each step of the assembly process. The only place we veered off the instructions was to use some Titebond III Wood Glue sparingly on all the wood joints and wooden dowels. This greatly adds to the overall strength when it's finished. Be sure to have a damp cloth ready to wipe off any excess glue that squeezes out when assembling the wooden fireplace mantle. Don't use glue if you ever plan on taking it apart for any reason.

Once the mantle is complete, the firebox simply slides into place from the back and is secured with two small pieces of wood and 4 screws. (Don't use glue on these two pieces.)

Overall Quality

The quality of modern electric fireplaces is amazing. There is quite a range in prices of electric fireplaces, but the model we choose looked absolutely incredible when completely assembled. And while you can buy them for less without the faux stone. The fit and finish on the wood veneer is extremely nice and it looks very realistic when the fireplace is on and the flame is flickering.

Corner Fireplace Remote Control

Since a corner electric fireplace can be controlled by buttons on the front, or with the included remote control. The remote makes it easy to turn on the flame only for effect. And the flames can be raised or lowered which makes for a great backlight when watching television.

The remote can also raise and lower the temperature of which the heater turns on and off. And it also controls a backlight which illuminates the side bricks in the firebox. This light can be used when the flames are off or on.
