A New 3rd Generation Chromecast Model Is on The Way
New Color Scheme, Improved WiFi, and Full-Time Bluetooth are Some of the Major Changes in This Year's Chromecast Release
Imagine this Redditor /u/GroveStreetHomie's surprise when he went into his local Best Buy to purchase what he thought was a current model Chromecast and walked out with Google's brand new updated model which has not yet been publicly released yet.
"I went to Best Buy earlier to pick up a Chromecast for my new TV, then I noticed the packaging and design was different from my first one," Reddit user GroveStreetHomie wrote. "I thought it was just a design refresh taking queues from the Chromecast Ultra. Then when I was at the cashier, they couldn't scan the item because it wasn't in the system yet because the release date is on the 9th of October (Same day as the 2018 Google event) but I guess they put it out too early. But since I already had it in my hand and was the same price as the 2nd generation Chromecast, they let me have it under the old SKU."
We have not heard much from Google in the last few years in the way of Chromecast updates. It's been about 3 years since they updated to their 2nd generation Chromecast model.
We did hear rumors a new 3rd generation 2018 Chromecast was arriving soon from FCC documents. Google has a Pixel Event scheduled on October 9th and may also have plans to announce the latest Chromecast at this event as well.
Thanks to this snafu, we now know more about what the new Chromecast will look like. Gone is the shiny top with the Google logo. It's been replaced with a matte black finished top and overall it's a little thicker. Other than that, it looks almost identical to the older 2nd generation Chromecast design.
We also know from the FCC docs, that the new Chromecast will have Bluetooth that can now be used all the time, instead of only during initial setup.
The newer 3rd generation Chromecast also features improved AC 5Ghz WiFi. One thing Google did with this model which may have been a cost saving factor was to eliminate the magnet from the tip of the HDMI connector. The new Chromecast also continues to use micro-USB instead of the newer USB Type C standard.
While using a Chromecast may not be as important as they once were a few years ago since now many televisions already come with Chromecast casting already built-in as do some Android Media Streamers like the awesome Nvidia SHIELD.
A Chromecast hardware solution is still one of the best ways to cast movies and TV shows from websites from your phone or laptop to your television versus using apps or software. Using Chromecast hardware to cast to your TV also tends to work better than using Roku Casting as well.
