Is The TV Guide The Future of Streaming?

Is An Interactive TV Guide The Future of Streaming?

The online electronic program TV guide was really one of the best things about watching cable and satellite TV. There was no jumping from app to app to view content. Just choose something to watch from the guide, press a button on your remote and you went right to watching the show in seconds.

Are All Those Roku Channels Really Needed?

New Roku channels were really cool when their platform was new and there were maybe only 50 channels. But now it almost seems it's getting to the point where no one really has the time to look through 4,500 Roku channels to watch TV for the evening. Especially when our TV viewing time is limited as it is. There always seems to be so much else competing for the little leisure time we have left for watching television.

The Roku channel store at last count has over 4,500 channels, not to mention this long list of private Roku channels. Imagine surfing between even a small fraction of all these channels on a daily basis to find your content. The way things are going, in a year or two there will be 7,000 and then maybe 10,000 or more Roku channels available to sift through.

Roku Search is a Great Feature

The number one complaint a while back cord cutters had was finding content. Roku has made some good advances in this field with their voice search remote, and also has a long list of search partners.

The Roku search app helps you find TV shows and movies by name or actors or directors. You also can search through a wide range of content including news, live streams and short video clips.

Roku also addressed finding content on their platform by offering a personalized "My Feed" section. This allows their users to keep track of movies and TV shows, plus it will notify when they become available to watch by tracking partner channels. You have to wonder though, how many Roku users really use it?

Apple May Be Onto Something Even Better

Recently, Apple CEO Tim Cook during their last WWDC keynote briefly spoke about their Apple TV Guide app named "TV" and how it now pulls in movies and television shows from over 50 streaming video sources.

The even bigger news is, later this year Amazon will be launching their Apple TV app that will also allow you to access Prime Video content directly from the Apple TV guide app.

At last count there are now 1,600 apps on Apple TV. A fully integrated guide that lets you quickly find content from all streaming content providers could prove to be extremely useful.

What The Future Holds For TV Streaming

We may never see a TV guide like what we had from our TiVo or Cable TV box. But if streaming TV giants like Apple or Roku ever did implement an interactive TV guide that allowed us to choose our favorite channels and then listed everyone's content making entering and exiting channels or apps a thing of the past. This would truly be a game changer and we will have reached another milestone in the way we interact with our media streamers to help us find and watch some great TV.

Rendition of a Roku EPG TV Guide we may hopefully see someday...
