Roku Remote Not Working? Try These Tips

Roku Remote Not Working?

Try these tips to quickly get your Roku remote working

The humble remote control is one of the best things about Roku media streamers. Many of us grew up with a remote control in our hands since we were practically babies.

There is something uniquely comforting about holding onto a remote while surfing through the many channels available for Roku. That is until your remote stops working...

Roku Remote Not Working
Don't Take a Hammer to it Until You Try This!

If your Roku Remote is not working, try these tips to help save yourself some needless aggravation and quickly get your Roku remote working again:

1. Replace/Remove the Roku Remote batteries. For whatever reason, batteries don't seem to last a long time in Roku remotes.

One of the first things to do when your Roku screen no longer responds to inputs from your remote, is remove and insert the batteries.

If you know your batteries are still relatively new, then you should be good to go.

Your remote will usually let you know when your batteries are getting week as the distance that it used to work at is gradually reduced.

If you can place your remote closer and all is well, go ahead and replace the batteries with a fresh set of Alkaline, not general purpose batteries. This is usually all it takes to quickly get your Roku remote and many other remotes working perfectly again.

2. Make sure your Roku IR Sensor is Clear. Sometimes things get moved around and your Roku is not oriented in the right direction.

An Infra Red (IR) remote works by shining an infrared beam of light from your remote to a receiver inside your Roku.

We humans can't see this infrared wave length. Fortunately, Roku added a LED light to the front of the Roku that lights up when ever it receives a signal command from the remote control.

3. Press the Hidden Pairing Button. Sometimes your Roku may need to be paired with the remote. Remove the battery cover from your Roku remote to access the hidden pairing button. Unplug your Roku player from the wall outlet for approximately 5 to 15 seconds. Plug it back and push then hold the pairing button for 5 seconds.

Pairing is useful when you have two different Roku models in the same room. Once they are paired, the remote control will only work with the Roku it's paired with.

4. Ditch the Roku Remote There are some really good alternatives to the Roku remote. You can get a free remote app for your iPhone or Android Phone. Click here to download these Apps for your Android or iOS handheld devices.

How To Operate Roku Without Remote

Awesome Universal Remote from URC

Replacing your Roku remote control with a 3rd party universal remote is another great alternative.

The URC RFS200 remote is an excellent universal remote that will control up to 10 different components. It has a very high build quality and even includes a nice backlight button that makes it easy to use at night or in low light conditions.

Programming the URC remote does not require computer science degree or even a computer. It can all be done right from the remote itself following the easy to understand manual.

We have used URC remotes for many years and the URC RFS200 is our hands down favorite. Unfortunately, these are getting harder and harder to find. Amazon still have a few left on their website. If this is something that would work nicely for you, take a closer look at this remote.

Buying a New Roku Remote

If none of these tips get your Roku remote working again, you may need to buy new Roku remote. Amazon also sells new Roku factory remotes. Click here for a list of all the Roku remotes they have available.

If your Roku can play games, or uses headphones, be sure to buy the correct remote control model so you won't lose any of these great features.

Recently Inteset released a very nice 4 in 1 Universal IR Remote that works great with Roku. You can read a review on this remote... here!
